I am a 1L law student and I was looking for a tutor. I find that studying the law is a daunting task and help is definitely needed. I don't want to waste time studying the wrong material and make unnecessary 1L mistakes. With each lesson, I feel more certain about my studies. I'm confident that with her help I will be able to do this. Her insight as to what I need to do has helped me clarify the steps that are required to study properly. She has a unique style of teaching that is methodical, organized, and precise. She is patient and explains the law in an understandable way. The lessons are always fun and encouraging. Also, I found her to be easily accessible through email or phone.
Tia arrived on time, she was very professional and ready to get to work with my son. My son needs help with reading and comprehension to reach his grade level. She made sure to bring learning material that would get him interested. He says that he is looking forward to his next lesson with her.
Tia was very easy to reach and made sure to kept in communication with me and answered any questions I needed answered. Her personal approach is much appreciated and I'm happy I found her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I obtained my Juris Doctorate from Concord Law School June 2013.
I took and passed the First Year Bar Exam in 2010.
I passed the CA Bar Exam in July 2014.
Before taking the Bar I went through a four month bar prep program. I have many materials and strategies to pass the bar, because of this.
I completed my second undergraduate degree in criminal justice. I have also completed law school, and have worked in law firms that have practiced criminal law. I have done independent study of the topic as I find it very interesting.
I have years of experience working with children, preschool through sixth grade.
My work experience in this area includes:
Tutoring two third graders in the area of Reading Comprehension, and overall study plans. References are available that set forth the progress that has been made since I have started working with them.
Providing assessment and study skill strategies for two students, grades 4 and 6.
I also have the following volunteer experience:
-Volunteering/mentoring with Big Brother/Big Sisters
-Volunteering for a Respite Daycare, ran by The Redcross
Additionally, I have completed Mandatory Reporting Program, necessary in order to work with children.
Primarily, I work with children to develop their English, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
The following is an example of one method I use when working with children in the area of reading comprehension:
I begin with an assessment of their skills, utilizing worksheets and various activities. Once I have an understanding on the needs of the individual child, I primarily use a method referred to as PQ4R, varying the technique to fit a specific child’s needs.
PQ4R, in summary, is a popular teaching method for Reading Comprehension. It’s name sets out the steps to use when working with a child: Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review. This step by step approach to reading comprehension has been found to be very effective, with the Board of Education finding that it benefits about 70% of children it’s used with.
I had two art classes in 2003. This included having work submitted in an art show, where I won an award for my painting. I have individually tutored two people in painting techniques, and in creating art projects.
Most recently, I have been a docent for the state wide Adventures in Art Program. This program allowed me to be part of group art classes, taught by well-known painters and artists. After finishing the AIA workshops, I go to a school in Torrance and teach a class of 22 elementry-age students painting, drawing, and others art projects.
I took two years of photography classes in 2003, as well as being part of the photography club in high school. I worked 3 years at Sears Portrait Studio as a photographer. I have also independently been active in learning photography.
I took a public speaking class during my undergraduate degree, in 2004.
I volunteered for a year at Pt. Fermin Lighthouse, where I gave tours to large groups of people.
I have my Juris Doctorate in law which required me to participate in debates, and a mock trial, where public speaking was of great importance.
I have one of my two Bachelor's in Social Psychology (2003), a degree that allowed me to study both sociology and psychology simultaneously. Specifically, I took classes that focused on Education Sociology, Sociology of Children and family, and Sociology as it relates to the criminal justice system. However, my range of knowledge on the area spreads into many other areas, and I have been able to utilize this foundation to tutor others in this subject area.
It’s an interesting area to study and teach, and knowledge of sociology can only help a person understand and function in society. I enjoy helping other students learn this subject, and seeing the positive effect it can have.
I have worked and volunteered for the State Blind and Disabled Center for the last nine years. This has given me experience working with people who have hearing and site disabilities, as well as learning disorders.
I have volunteered with Action for the Aging, which included caring for those with various physical disabilities.
I have also worked independently with family members who have ADHD, learning disorders, and psych. disorders.
I have had a successful educational career which included honors classes in High School, two Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice and Social Psychology, and a Juris Doctorate earned this year from Concord Law school. I could have done none of this without a thorough understanding of study skills.
I am very sympathetic to the stress and overwhelming feeling that comes with studying, and balancing work, family, or other activities with that. I have assisted other students, family members and clients in helping set up the optimal schedule to fit their life and educational demands.
