My name is Svetco. I have an extensive teaching background in K-12 subjects, with a specialty in subjects such as English and Spanish. I also teach university-level ESL/EFL and Spanish. In terms of university degrees, I hold a master's degree in Linguistics-TESL and a B.A. in Spanish.
My most recent experience has been in teaching English to university students in Saudi Arabia. I have also had EFL teaching experiences in China and Mexico.
It would be a pleasure to work with students via WyzAnt as well as become a member of a staff of innovative teachers, tutors, and curriculum planners.
Lastly, please see my teaching philosophy below:
As a teacher who has worked with students of practically all ages – from kindergartners to retirees – I feel I have had ample time through the years to develop a teaching philosophy that is both effective and enjoyable to students. The term “effective,” in this sense, would mean that the lessons I carry out as a language teacher meet students’ learning goals in terms of a given course syllabus, and at a larger level, a given school’s curriculum as a whole, whether it be a degree program or the preparation of students for the next level of language learning.
When I say I would like my students’ learning to be “enjoyable,” I mean that their experience in my classroom should make them feel not only satisfied and proud that they have mastered the material I presented to them for practical purposes, but they should also feel engaged in the daily classroom activities and inspired to further explore the subject I have taught them. For example, if students leave my English class inspired to further explore academic writing, poetry, or dramatic literature and make it their main field of study, or more simply, if they feel motivated to continue improving their communication skills in English to help their chosen career, then I feel I have accomplished the ultimate goal that I set for myself as a teacher: to inspire young minds to strive for excellence in their chosen field and realize their dreams through their experience in my classroom.
In terms of teaching style, my approach is to be open and direct with students about what the goals and objectives are of each lesson and thematic unit, and on a larger level, the course that is being studied. Once the goals and objectives have been established with the students, my style is to present new material – whether it is for a speaking, listening, reading, or writing course – in a manner that is both effective for student’s understanding as well as meaningful so that the students are interested and engaged in each classroom activity. Computer technology is also incorporated as much as possible into my presentation of material as well as throughout the project-oriented, task-based programs I tend to teach. Once the material is presented, the students take on a more hands-on approach to learning in both independent and group projects with my role becoming more of a facilitator.
This student-centered approach, I believe, prepares students best for the rigors and demands of the 21st-century, high-tech workplace that expects a hands-on, problem-solving approach from its workforce.
My experience spans over 15 years and includes teaching and tutoring K-12 students in Language Arts/English/ESL as well as international college students in ESL writing and speaking. I have a master's degree in TESL and currently work with international college students from all over the world in helping them pass TOEFL, write academic essays for school, improve their speaking and listening skills, etc.
My approach is to find out your personal learning goals (TOEFL, school essays, grammar practice, speaking, etc.) then devise a tutoring program where you will be doing hands-on work with my guidance and support as a facilitator to your learning. I will assess your learning progress, give you feedback, and methodically set goals for your improvement. Together we can help you reach your goals!
