Hello! My name is Mary Ann, and I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2009 with a bachelor of arts in sociology and minors in education and Asian American studies. Currently, I am a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles working on my MSW.
I have worked with students from various backgrounds ages 5 to 26 years old. During my undergraduate career I became highly involved with a youth mentorship program as a volunteer mentor/tutor, intern, and eventually the program's coordinator for the 2008-2009 academic year. As a mentor/tutor I provided students with academic assistance in math, English, and reading comprehension. As a coordinator, I trained and guided 30+ college students on how to properly handle any given academic and/or social situation that may arise while mentoring.
I definitely believe that a tutor must possess patience, knowledge of the subject, and belief in their tutee's capabilities. Providing my students with culturally relevant explanations in order to help them understand a subject matter while taking their learning styles into consideration, I believe has produced successful outcomes.
