In May 2011, I earned my TESL certificate from University of California Extension–Irvine where I took classes that balanced theory and practice. This included ESL teaching methods, ESL reading skills, ESL writing skills, ESL pronunciation, ESL grammar, ESL language structure, teaching American idioms, and ESL learning games.
In May 2013, I will complete my master’s degree in English–TESL at California State University–Dominguez Hills. I have completed courses in phonology, ESL teaching methods, ESL theories of language acquisition, advanced pronunciation, American English, teaching ESL reading, and teaching English grammar. In addition, I have a strong background in teaching writing. Finally, I have a strong educational background in The Communicative Method, which focuses on speaking and listening competence. My educational objectives are to improve and broadening my ESL teaching skills.
I am a skilled tutor in English reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar for work, community, and college. My teaching methods include breaking down lessons into manageable tasks and using practical real-life exercises. I am enthusiastic and compassionate, and you should expect to make progress at every lesson. My accomplishments include helping many English language learners from age six to sixty-five.
For those students who wish to improve their pronunciation, I will record your reading a short passage, diagnose your specific pronunciation errors, and give you a report of my findings. In this way, we can focus lessons on those specific pronunciation areas that need work.
To make rapid progress, together we will—
1. Identify your personal ESL goals: English for school, the workplace, the community, or everyday living. We will work simultaneously on the four skills areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing—-or a combination of skills that need immediate attention. Whatever your goals, I can help you improve your English, step-by-step.
2. Learn English grammar systematically: I can teach you how to use your natural language learning ability to improve your English.
3. Develop your personal learning plan: We each learn by using a combination of studying, observing, and doing. You may be someone who likes to jump right in to social situations, or you may prefer studying by yourself before trying your English in public. Perhaps you are someone who likes to watch and listen to others before jumping in to a conversation. We will work together to discover your learning style and use it to make an effective English language learning plan.
My life’s work is to help ESL learners at all levels and from all walks of life gain a better command of English for their personal success. I would be pleased to talk with you about your specific tutoring needs.
