Hi,

I am a high school teacher, as well as a tutor, and currently teach high school Biology, Earth Science, AP Environmental Science, and ELL classes. In the past I have taught Physical Science and Algebra as well.

As a teacher and tutor, I work with students to ask the right questions, think critically about their environment and community, learn from each other, and gain a greater understanding of the world around them through a variety of methods.

As a tutor, I look at what is happening in your life and where you are having problems. We then work together to develop the best plan for you to be successful. It is important to me that you master the knowledge and are able to relate it to your own life. We make it work together!!

I am a highly qualified teacher and tutor, with a Master of Arts, Education from Claremont Graduate University (Summa Cum Laude), a Master's of Business Administration, Global Business from the University of Redlands (Magna Cum Laude), and a Bachelor of Science, Environmental Science (Honors Program) from the University of California, Riverside. I hold current teaching credentials in four subject areas and am certified by the College Board to teach AP Environmental Science. In addition, I conducted marine biology research in the Turks and Caicos Islands, participated as a a Fulbright Scholar in research in Vietnam, and was selected as 1 of 10 teachers in the United States to participate in the 2013 India Summer Teacher Exchange Program through the U.S. Department of State.

I have spent over 9 years as a private tutor, trainer at various Fortune 500 companies, and a teacher. I hold my students to the highest expectations and use my experiences to work with my students and assist them in "getting it". I help them to comprehend subject material at a deeper cognitive level and relate it to the "real world".

Passionate about education and its possibilities, I provide a real-world approach to teaching and unique methods to engage and motivate students. Biology

I teach high school biology, both to English Language Learners and regular biology students. In my classes, we discuss how current events are linked to biology and link the material to information that students are already familiar with from previous classes.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary and academic language play a large role in the success of students, both in school and on exams. In class, my students and I focus on vocabulary as part of a larger whole of understanding, which gives context and meaning to the words. This has proven successful over the years as my students score higher and more proficient on language ability tests.

There are many tips and tricks to using Word successfully. I can show you the way to optimize your time and produce documents quickly and easily.

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra is essential for success in Algebra I and II and other mathematics classes. I can relate the concepts to students in an easily understood manner and help them to truly comprehend the material.

Reading

I work with students from many different backgrounds and languages to improve their reading comprehension, academic language skills, and vocabulary retention. Using proven techniques, my students gain confidence in their own abilities and improve on test as well as in conversations and reading abilities.

Astronomy

Astronomy is a subject with many complex, yet simple areas of study. As part of my Earth Science course, I remain current on issues and topics in this field.

Literature

Much of literature is about understanding the author and the time period the piece was written. It is about enjoying the work, but also about understanding the messages of the author and how to apply the work to your own life and society today. I am an avid reader and have a knack for relating a piece of literature to today.

GED

I have been a successful GED tutor for over 7 years with a more than 90% pass rate on the first attempt. Together, my students and I focus on the basics and using that knowledge to build more advanced skills. I teach them how to take the test, as well as the concepts and material that are likely to appear on the test.

SAT Reading

Reading and comprehension are skills that I teach my students each day. For the SAT, it is important to understand the types of questions and strategies that will allow you to maximize your score and minimize the time spent on each question.

Physical Science

I successfully taught Physical Science in the past, providing methods for my students to link concepts of the course to their existing background knowledge.

Geology

Geology is important for understanding many of the other sciences. As part of my environmental science training, I completed many field excursions and testing in Geology using the geology of California as my training ground. Geology is linked to many other science disciplines and is vital for understanding both science and politics today.

Ecology

My degree in Environmental Science, as well as my AP Environmental Science certification provides an excellent foundation for understanding Ecology and connecting it to current events and other course material.

ACT Science

Currently, I teach Biology and Earth Science and hold a BS in Environmental Science. I scored a perfect score on the ACT when I took the exam in high school.

Elementary Science

Elementary science is the basic foundation for a successful career in science during middle and high school. It is meant to be a fun and exciting course of study in elementary school that provides engagement and learning for students. I can provide the basics for a solid science foundation and provide your child with a good start in science.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an active credentialed teacher in California. Prior to teaching in high school, I worked as a substitute in the Corona-Norco school district working in all grade levels. I have worked with the at the Chavez Community Center in Riverside for 3 years tutoring elementary and middle school students in Reading, Writing, and Math three times a week.

Study Skills

I am an experienced teacher who works with my students on study skills, particularly through the AVID program (of which I am a teacher). In the AVID program, we teach students how to study, how to take notes, and how to achieve success in high school in preparation for college. ESL/ESOL

I am the designated teacher for the ELL students at my high school. I have attended multiple seminars and classes in this field. My teaching credential also includes the R142 designation which authorizes the holder to provide instruction for English language development in grades twelve and below, including preschool, and in classes organized primarily for adults. I hold credentials in Biology, GeoScience, and Health Science as well as Business. Prior to teaching, I worked at a zoo for five years, conducted marine biology research, and did field research and data collection. Zoology is an important component of biology, earth science, and AP Environmental Science and provides a link between the sciences.

Business

I hold an MBA in Global Business from the University of Redlands. I graduated with over a 3.8 in the program on a 4.0 scale.

Photography

I have been an active photographer for over 20 years. Beginning in high school, I was the winner of the Kodak competition at the state level and competed on the national level placing in the top 10. During university, I exhibited at UCR, as well as appearing in publications for the university.
