When I first encountered Microsoft Word, my department had recently purchased the "brand new" Mac computers. Word was foreign to us, but we had to learn— and learn quickly. I took my little Mac home and went through the complete User's Manual over the weekend. I became the department expert; and with each successive update, I have maintained my skill level.
In the course of working in the publications department of a major software company, I have utilized every aspect of high-end publishing, including templates, master documents, table of contents and indexing. All of our documents were converted to Adobe PDF files with functioning contents, indexes and links.
Eventually, I became part of the departmental support group dealing with Word and Adobe problems, and was often requested to help with issues because of my patient and non-judgmental demeanor.
