Since I love learning about new cultures and interacting with people, I have done individual ESL tutoring since 2005. During my sophomore year at UC Riverside, I started tutoring students that were studying abroad there. My focus was on oral English, getting students to practice their English while correcting their mistakes/weak areas. Also, I helped students build confidence in speaking as it is essential when learning a foreign language. During my junior year I tutored in math classes at a local high school and really enjoyed working with youth.
I was co-president of the American Marketing Association my senior year of college (at the University of California, Riverside) and received my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from there. After graduating, I lead college aged students in volunteer projects in rural areas of Costa Rica for three months. Then I returned to the USA and managed over 600 student representatives in the year that I did marketing for an organization called International Student Volunteers. During that time I found that I missed working face to face with people other than my co-workers.
After a year of working in marketing, I applied for the one year TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate program at UC Riverside. There I learned to teach English as a language at all levels ranging from kindergarten kids to college students to professional workers, abroad and in the USA. My last course in the TESOL program consisted of me teaching my own class for ten weeks.
I worked as an English teacher for ELS Language Schools; I started as a substitute and then taught my own business English class. I taught written and oral English at a college in China for a year and half. Meanwhile, also teaching speaking and listening classes to middle school and high school students at a summer camp and tutoring individual teens on my weekends.
I enjoy working with students, from kids to adults, and trying to improve their English!
