I have years of experience working with students with ADD and ADHD in a volunteer and professional setting, as well as having raised two sons with ADHD. I currently tutor adult students in ESL with learning disabilities including ADD/ADHD, autism and other developmental disabilities, and have in the past tutored children with ADD/ADHD and other learning disabilities through the No Child Left Behind program in conjunction with Long Beach Unified School District.
I have a BA Degree in Anthropology from CSULB where I graduated with highest honors (3.8 GPA) in 1982. I earned a certificate in Ukrainian Culture from Harvard University by attended a summer course at the Harvard University Ukrainian Studies Institute in 1979. I was awarded the outstanding student Anthropology Department Award at my graduation in 1982. I worked as a teaching assistant for one of my professors at CSULB, mainly helping with Intro level Cultural Anthropology and Medical Anthropology courses. I was admitted to several graduate school programs in anthropology, including the Ivy League School University of Pennsylvania. I selected a graduate program at Feng Chia University (Taichung, Taiwan) where I taught ESL (English as a Second Language) and also received a certificate in Chinese Language and Culture after two years in Taiwan. I also took several additional graduate level courses in Anthropology when I returned to the United States. My specialty areas are in both physical and cultural anthropology, linguistics and archaeology.
I have in the past tutored numerous high-school students who are in the process of applying as undergraduates, as well as many students who are applying to graduate school. In my capacity as both a private tutor, and later as a principal at a local ESL English college, I have helped students to fill out applications, fill out FAFSA applications, and to create original and unique essay question answers, statements of intent, and college essays. I provide support by suggestion, proofreading, editing, and finding out and making sure that the inner strengths of a student are defined and explored in their submitted essays.
I have extensive experience tutoring students K-6 as well as K-12 in a variety of subjects including language arts, English/ESL, history, social studies, and art. I have also worked as a teacher's aide in a 2nd grade classroom, and as an academic decathlon coach for 6th through 8th grade students teaching logic, social studies, speech and language arts. I have also volunteered in Public and Private schools in K-6th grade classrooms for the last 20 years, tutoring students in reading and math. In addition, I am currently employed by a tutoring service that contracts with Long Beach Unified School District and is funded through the No Child Left Behind Act, and in this capacity I tutor children grades K-8 in Language Arts and Math. I also tutor K-6 students at a private language school. I have a college degree and extensive background in all aspects of social studies and well.

I have significant job experience in other non-related fields working with people from dozens of different countries, as well as hosting international students in my home. My expertise is in conversational English, American pronunciation, Idioms, Vocabulary building and Business English.
I have over twenty-five years experience teaching ESL and English Language Arts, including extensive instruction in English (and American-English)pronunciation improvement. I use phonics drills, tongue twisters, and patterns to improve pronunciation and reading. I teach spelling techniques, easy sight word reading techniques, and use a mixture of philosophies including whole language learning, explicit and systematic phonics, and many other techniques depending upon the student's needs. With adult ESL learners I have great success with "problem" sounds (such as R vs L and blends like BR and BL in native Asian language speakers) and letters/letter blends and combinations, by repetitive drills and anatomical awareness of correct pronunciation. This helps immensely with reading and speaking skills. With younger students and beginning readers I increase motivation with fun, exciting literature that increases the child's eagerness to learn to read and to handle phonic difficulties more easily. I currently teach adult language/ESL at a language institute in Torrance, and also tutor language arts including phonics with a tutoring company contracted by Long Beach Unified School District and the No Child Left Behind Act.
I have considerable experience in public speaking, beginning with high school and college courses in Speech and Debate, including award winning performances at several speech contests. In addition, I have tutored members of Middle School and High School Academic Decathlon teams in Public Speaking, and several of these students have delivered award-winning speeches. I have been employed in many jobs and also in volunteer activities where I was required to run meetings, make presentations and deliver speeches. For example, I organized a Bartender’s Union Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, a five day event, where I was the introductory speaker at many seminars and main events. I also have a long history of acting in Community Theatre productions which is certainly demonstrative of public speaking skill. I train students not only to write excellent speeches, but to captivate the audience and deliver high energy, articulate speeches, while also disseminating all necessary information, and to develop a sense of personal style that they can use in the future.
I have significant experience working with elementary and middle school students on improving their language arts skills. Most recently I worked through a private tutoring company and the Long Beach Unified School District No Child Left Behind Program. All of my students posted a positive gain of at least 20% improvement from their initial assessment to their final assessments. I also have tutored private to students of all ages in English Language reading, writing, pronunciation, speaking and listening skills.
