I worked at The Seattle Times for 20 years, and, during that time, helped establish the nationally award winning NIE (Newspapers in Education) department in 1995, and in 1999, became the Program and Curriculum Manager. I negotiated with the educational divisions of the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Pacific Science Center, the Museum of History and Industry, the Seattle Theater Group and many other local and national entities to establish curricula and programs. I wrote in-paper curricula and published guides to support the program. I set up an advisory board of local educators and administrators. I marketed to the 18,000 teachers in our delivery area for The Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer. In 2001, we won an NAA (Newspaper Association of America) award as the most innovative program in the U.S.
After retiring from The Times, I set up my own company, and secured a regular client as a part-time news editor for a national publication headquartered in Santa Monica, CA. I accepted submissions from volunteer correspondents all over the U.S., and helped bureau chiefs in major metropolitan areas assign and edit stories for publication. I had the opportunity to meet wonderful people and help them get published in a national organ newspaper. At the same time, I taught Journalism at a local private middle school and at a local community college class for three years, 2006-2009. I designed a course curricula that focused on a different form of media each week. I taught Twitter before anyone heard of it, in fact, my students laughed hysterically when I first told them about it in the Fall, 2007.
After leaving that job and moving to California, I went to work at Soka University as a writing tutor in the Writing Center, and this year I added the Orange County School of the Arts to my resume, where I have been teaching Performance Poetry.
I have maintained my editing company and still work on book-length projects.
My work as a tutor for this company has been primarily with the Asian community, and I enjoy working with this community very much, since that is also my primary clientele at Soka University. I preview the lesson that the parent wants me to work on with their child ahead of time, meet with the student at a place that is convenient for them, and communicate afterward with the parent to make sure that I have successfully fulfilled what they are looking for in terms of helping their children succeed in school.
As a newspaper-in-education program designer and specialist for a major metropolitan newspaper, I went into the field and worked with (primarily elementary) school kids, both one on one and in the classroom, particularly in writing and reading. I also worked with a specialist in this field to develop an in-paper program that won a national award.
I have a BA in English from the University of Massachusetts, an MA in Education from Seattle University and coursework (half completed) toward a second MA in Film Studies from Chapman University. I am a writer and editor and I have been teaching for eight years, including literature, journalism (including all types of journalistic writing, including script writing), and now am a writing specialist at Soka University, working mainly with international students for whom English is a second language.
I have several years of tutoring international students, particularly those well versed in Asian languages. I have been learning the various ways in which syntax is different between Asian languages and English, and this has informed my tutoring, and enabled me to better help those who are struggling to read and write in English. I am a person who has visited Asian countries many times, both as a child and adult, and I have great affection for those cultures and enjoy working with these students very much.
I have completed coursework toward an MA in Film Studies. Film studies will include an analysis of world cinema and American film, and screenwriting.
I am an editor of book-length fiction and nonfiction. I work for private and public clients. I have been working in this capacity for the last eleven years. Before that, I was editing for a major metropolitan newspaper. I was also a news editor part-time for a national newspaper for five years. For the past two and a half years, I have been working with international students at a four year university, primarily on grammar. I believe I am very highly qualified in this field.
I taught a literature class in 2006-2007 school year to a private high school class full of Microsoft children in Woodinville, Washington, utilizing the Writer's Hero's Journey as my curriculum. I taught mass communication at a community college in Seattle from 2007 to 2009. From 2011 to present, I have been working one on one as a writing tutor at the Writing Center, Soka University, Aliso Viejo, CA. I am a writer, and a literature major in college. I am also a voracious reader, and have been reading the highest quality literature since childhood. I read most of Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Dostoevsky by age 22.
I am an editor of book-length fiction and nonfiction, and in the capacity of proofreader for other clients. I have been working in this capacity for the last eleven years. Before that, I was editing and proofreading material for a major metropolitan newspaper and also for a national newspaper. For the past two and a half years, I have been working with international students at a four year university, primarily on proofing their academic papers for grammar. I believe I am very highly qualified in this field.
I grew up in a theater family and was thrust on the stage at age three, and acted on both radio and stage at age five on, until, in my mid-twenties, I was a semi-professional actress (meaning I did not have an Equity card) for several years. I also have a talent tape for radio work. I studied theater and acting in college.
I am a professional writer and editor. I am currently a writing specialist at Soka University, Aliso Viejo, working primarily with international students. Please contact me if you wish to hire me as your tutor. I work with students on such topics as: Developing your Thesis Statement, Developing an Argument, Writing for a Broader Audience (writing for an audience of one, i.e., a professor, is much more difficult than writing for a broader audience), etc. One good definition of writing is: "Writing is the communication of content for a purpose to an audience."
