Elementary (K-6th)

I am a credentialed teacher in K-6, and have tutored 4 and 5th graders in Language Arts and Reading.

ESL/ESOL

I have been tutoring and teaching beginning ESL for more than 10 years. I received a M.A. degree in it while I was teaching students in the classroom. I have experience and materials (books, videos, computer lessons) to help along with picture dictionaries. I also teach and tutor adults retired and professionals to upgrade and gain more vocabulary, ease of speaking, and listening skills. The difference between an English teacher and an ESL teacher is the content. English is usually grammar only and ESL focus in on survival vocabulary, conversation, and understanding. I have patience, flexibility, and a caring personality. I know you can succeed and I want to help you.

General Computer

I have recently taken Microsoft Office 2007 Suite and Adobe Photoshop CS5 classes with a certificate in the Introductory and Beginning phases.

Macintosh

I have experience using a MacBook. I type my lessons and lesson plans in Microsoft Word for Mac. The programs I use frequently are Microsoft Word for Mac, some Excel for spreadsheets, and the Internet.
I have used PowerPoint in the past.

Phonics

I have been teaching phonics and pronunciation to adults and children. I have a master's degree in ESL which included course work on phonetics.

Photography

I took two years of photography principals and darkroom techniques. I taught a class at the Denver Free University on composing in the camera. I have taken two Adobe Photoshop classes.

Writing

I've been teaching writing and grammar for all levels of English and for business professionals who need help in correspondence, emails, contracts, and legal papers. For an M.A. degree, I followed rules of English grammar to fulfill project and dissertation requirements. As a UCLA graduate, I wrote A term papers. I maintain a blog with articles for students' reading and am currently taking a creative writing class through Saddleback college.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
