I just completed my second year at Thomas Aquinas College (TAC), located in Santa Paula, CA. TAC offers only one major, the Liberal Arts, and has no elective courses. The courses include Philosophy
, Theology, various kinds of Mathematics
, the Sciences, Latin
(freshman and sophomore year only), Music
(junior year only), and what is known as Seminar which includes different readings in history
, philosophy, etc. At TAC we have no textbooks, only the Great Books. We read the works of the original authors as opposed to someone else's thoughts on that author. The individual class meetings are based upon the Socratic method of discussion, the Professor (we call the Tutors) will open the class with a question regarding the text prepared beforehand. In response to the question, the students will themselves discuss it, as opposed to listening to the thoughts of one person they have a chance to formulate and share their own thoughts with each other. As I said above, all the works we read at TAC are by the original authors. These include: City of God (St. Augustine), the Aeneid (Virgil), De Anima - On the Soul (Aristotle, the Divine Comedy (Dante), the Birds, the Clouds(both by Aristophanes), the Elements (Euclid), and the Histories (Herodotus).
My philosophy of learning is that people learn best when they arrive at the knowledge themselves. For when they do, they both know the thing itself and also why they know it. My goal as a tutor is to provide, as it where, the helping hand necessary to take the steps from not knowing, at all or very well, to knowing. This further includes teaching the student to teach themselves.
