I am a credentialed general secondary career teacher, familiar with teenagers for a career spanning over forty years and including a variety of subjects. Art, English, Math, and Coaching were the dominant areas of service. I taught with the L.A. City, Newport Mesa, Rolling Hills, and Imperial School Districts. In addition I have raised three sons, two of whom are college graduates and one deceased, a leukemia victim. I understand that sometimes illness can derail a student's progress in school. I provide students who have temporarily fallen behind in class with additional instruction which facilitates their understanding of subject matter in English, General Math, Algebra, and Art. I also teach swimming and golf, two sports I've coached.
Having worked for over forty years as a teacher and coach, I am accustomed to the problems students encounter in class in a large group They often can use individual one on one help outside school. Even homework can be daunting for students who have been absent and consequently missed the teacher's complete explanation of material being covered. There can also be many distractions to learning in some classrooms for students who attend regularly.
My mission in tutoring is to explain material with which a student may be having difficulty. By showing him an organized step by step procedure, guiding him towards the solution of math or compositional problems. Students learn and remember in different ways, visual being one of the strongest. Connecting new learning to concepts a person knows already builds on an established foundation and is one way to relate new information to that which the student already knows. If learning is made relevant to a person's life in an important way, he will learn faster and remember longer.
As a teacher, I motivate a student with quality instruction, positive reinforcement, promotion of self confidence, and illustration of math and compositional procedures. Insight is as welcome as sun after a storm. It takes patience and the will to achieve success one step at a time. Knowledge is a commodity that can change your life and lead to a better you. A person with a long term goal in life is unstoppable. One of the things I try to do is get a student to identify his goals.
I studied Drawing in college while fulfilling my Secondary Art Teaching Credential. I taught drawing as a part of beginning and advanced Art classes at the secondary level from 1960 through 1997. My curriculum included one and two point perspective drawing, figure drawing, landscape and still life drawing, and commercial art design using hand lettering in combination with drawing. I also included a large variety of art media such as pencil, charcoal, pastels, oil pastels, ink, scratchboard, and more. I employed gesture, contour, modeled and perspective techniques to depict the human figure and other natural subjects. I emphasized the study of human proportions, foreshortening, and portraiture. I drew attention to the depiction of light. Often I incorporated drawing into painting and collage. In addition, the students produced school yearbooks, wall murals, and poster art, which included extensive design and drawing. To evaluate the effectiveness of student work, I give primary consideration to art elements and principles.
I worked with many elementary students as a substitute teacher at the school district from which I retired. The job required being on call to teach any class from K through 12th grade, and being prepared to efficiently carry out the lesson plans left by the teacher. I taught every grade level and a variety of subjects. A few times I taught for former high school students of mine who had become elementary and junior high teachers. I continued this work for six years following retirement. Having raised three sons, I am familiar with K-6 curriculum and enjoy the age group for their their unabashed enthusiasm. High school students, more self conscious, show enthusiasm by simply being anxious to get to work.
As a high school art teacher I taught photography and publications, a class that produced the annual school yearbook. We did all out own photography. In the fine arts classes, I used photography as reference material for self portraits, landscape, and still life in conjunction with drawing from life. Working from photos allows a constant light on the subject every day. I now use digital photography which allows me to edit photos as regards cropping, contrast, focus, color, and retouching. I took photography classes in college with film and worked in a dark room. Using a film camera taught me about film exposure for given light conditions and the use of a variety of lenses. Now I shoot with a digital camera and photograph jewelry, real estate, and musicians for clients to use online and on album covers and posters.
My experience includes teaching swimming and water ballet to children of elementary and high school age for the Pasadena City Dept. of Recreation. I also worked as a lifeguard for Pasadena. I was auditioned and employed as a performer at Sea World in a show presented by Frank Sennes Moulin Rouge Company which included a stage show combined with a water show. I took college level classes in swimming and water ballet, and have participated in additional water shows in Glendale and Hollywood. As a teacher, licensed water safety instructor and lifeguard, I took responsibility for high school classes at Imperial High School in Imperial, CA. I am trained in CPR and competent to deal with medical emergencies. Finally, I am an experienced teacher with a Lifetime General Secondary Credential from the State of California and a career of teaching as an invaluable resource. Swimming and water safety are skills I consider vitally important, and in which I excel.
