Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read my profile! My philosophy is to develop an environment that feels safe for you to learn, explore, take risks, ask questions, and enjoy the process while growing from your musical experiences. I am passionate about music, and I also believe that music learning needs to be fun. For me, this means teaching with energy, enthusiasm and variety.

I am a credentialed choral music teacher with Bachelor Degrees in piano performance and music composition. I am also a songwriter, with three CD's to my credit. I love to improvise and create my own arrangements of jazz standards, and I have been teaching since 2001. I teach both children and adults.

Lastly, I believe in teaching what YOU want to learn. So please have specific goals in mind when we meet, and I look forward to helping you have a wonderful creative learning experience with music!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a Bachelors Degree in Music Composition from California State University, Fullerton. I also studied classical composition privately with renowned composer Gail Kubik, and have taught composition privately for the last ten years. My last CD, entitled "Show Me The Way", contains all original compositions. Musical styles include choral works, jazz and blues, instrumental piano and pop ballads.

Ear Training

Ear training is a matter of repetition and working with intervals, starting with small distances between two notes and progressing into skips and larger distances. I use well-known songs to make learning intervals and ear-training both easy and fun!

Piano

I have actively taught piano to both children and adults for the last 11 years. Beginners are so much fun to teach because they learn so quickly! I like to do lots of games and work with rhythms. We learn to read the notes, count the beats of the music, and play songs together. For students who already know how to play, I encourage you to pick music that you would like to learn. This can be anything from classical to pop. I have been playing piano since I was six, and I have a lot of passion and enthusiasm for teaching, and for music in general!

Sight Singing

Sight Singing is closely related to ear training, which is a matter of repetition and working with intervals, starting with small distances between two notes and progressing into skips and larger distances. As you master singing the intervals correctly, I include well-known songs to make sight singing both easy and fun!

Songwriting

In college I studied the structure of song writing as part of my music education. Upon graduation, I continued my education, using the book "The Craft and Business of Song Writing" as a practical guide to creating and marketing artistically and commercially successful songs. Today I tutor students privately in songwriting, as well as write and market my own songs. My last CD contains songs in a variety of musical styles, such as jazz, blues R&B and pop ballads.

Voice (Music)

I am a credentialed music teacher with an emphasis in choral music. For the last 5 years, I have taught singing to children in grades 5 through 8. I prepare the students to sing twice a week for assemblies, as well as school performances for Christmas, Easter, the 8th grade musical and the "Spring-Sing Finale", complete with a combo band! I am also a choir director for an adult community choir.
