Hi, I'm Daniel and I graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in biochemistry. Throughout college I volunteered as a tutor for the AVID program at a local high school. It was this experience that ignited in me a passion for coaching students in their studies. I currently work with students of all ages, from elementary grades to college.
My methods:
I have a strong background in mathematics and sciences, and most students come to me for help in those areas. I specialize in tutoring chemistry and several math courses (Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus). I also tutor life sciences (biology, anatomy) and physics.
My approach to tutoring varies to best suit a student's individual style of learning and time constraints. I find that most students come with a loose foundation--that is, with some pieces of understanding but not yet rock solid. It's my job to fill in the missing gaps and solidify concepts for the students. I'm not replacing the role of a teacher; I'm supplementing and adding to what the teacher does in the classroom.
For the student crunched for time because of an imminent exam, I may request the student or parent to email me a study guide so that I can create a lesson that covers as many topics as time affords. Additionally, I may bring prepared worksheets or notes for students to take home and study after our session is over. That way students can continue learning and reviewing concepts from the lesson. This also gives students confidence that they can study without the company of a tutor.
How parents are involved:
It's important to me to inform parents/guardians on the progress of their students. I will give progress reports with every lesson or as often as possible. I'll provide these updates either in person, over the phone, or by email. I also welcome your feedback and input. Please let me know if I can do something to better help your student.
To students:
I will be supportive and give you tips for succeeding in the classroom. Study tips and practice suggestions are built into every lesson. Please know that I cannot promise you miraculous results if you are not willing to put in the effort. I will help you discover a study regimen that works for you, giving you input on location, time, and methods. Remember that a large part of your success will depend on how much YOU are willing to work for it, and that your tutor cannot do the work for you.
On cancellations:
I recognize that paying for tutoring services can be a sacrifice, so I make a great effort to show up on time to all scheduled appointments. In the rare event that I need to reschedule, I will do so with at least 24 hours notice. In return, if you need to cancel/reschedule, I require 24 hours notice. Please understand that because I am providing a service, I cannot refund appointments made on shorter than 24 hours notice.
