In this era of emphasis on all things STEM, especially for girls, I'm here for all the language and English related things that you need inside of and outside of the STEM world. Not to downplay the importance of STEM in any way...I lived and taught in Japan for 26 years and I know that kids in the US, especially in the elementary, middle- and high school arenas, need all the help they can get to keep up with kids in Japan's schools (which are now at #5 worldwide according to some studies) and in schools all over Asia (of which Singapore, S. Korea and Taiwan top the list). These are the kids you (or your children) are going to be up against when looking for jobs in just a few years.
But before STEM, even, there is English, reading, writing...and ESL for those whose first language is not English. This is where I can help. I've taught ESL to all ages, taught Japanese as a Second Language to American students in Japan, English Language Arts to grades 8 and 9 in an international school, and Academic English at Temple University's Tokyo campus to students wanting to get into a US university or college. In addition, I have done translation work in not only Japanese but French, so although I've never actually taught French I feel I am well-versed enough in it to help any struggling student.
I am passionate about communication, be it written or spoken, as it is THE key that unlocks every other door you or your child will have to open. There's just no other way about it. As far as I'm concerned, though, it's what is the most enjoyable and most challenging facet of our lives.
And I know kids. I raised two of them who are now in their 20s, and, thank God, gainfully employed. I volunteer at the Teen Center at the Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach, where I've lived now for three years. I'm ready and eager to get back in the teaching saddle.
Contact me and we'll talk about what your student needs.
