Hello,

I work collaboratively and patiently, giving you the tools needed to self-check and work independently. After earning my master's degree in 2007 I began teaching reading and writing to students of all ages. I have 6 years of experience providing one-on-one writing assistance in a university support center. I've reviewed documents of all genres for clarity, grammar and citations. My experience as a composition professor has made me keenly aware of the expectations at the college level.

When I'm not helping adults, I also tutor at the K-12 level. I teach the skills needed to the master the SAT's Reading and Writing sections, including the essay! For younger students, I have experience using the Lindamood-Bell Learning Process for basic (elementary) reading.

Finally, my bachelor's degree was in art so I can also teach you to draw, paint or make prints! I still make art independently and believe that we are always in a state of learning, no matter the subject.

I look forward to helping you reach your educational goals.

ADD/ADHD

I have spent the last 6 years tutoring many adults with ADD in a writing support center at JFK University. I also have experience with ADHD children (ages 6-8) through my experience teaching at Lindamood-Bell Reading Center. I understand the need for frequent breaks, minimized distraction, and a positive attitude.

Adobe Photoshop

I have worked with Adobe Photoshop since 2001, learning short-cuts and tricks from the best when I studied graphic design. I still use Photoshop regularly for my own artwork, to document and edit images to display online.
Unlike many computer teachers, I don't "do it in front of you" and expect you to learn. I ask you to sit at keyboard and I talk you through it slowly: allowing time for you to process the steps, take notes and learn from mistakes.

College Counseling

I have worked in academia for the last 6 years as an Academic Support Specialist and as a faculty member. In these roles I have assisted students as they compose personal statements and application packets.

Drawing

I earned an MFA from California College of the Arts in printmaking. I also hold a bachelor's degree in Drawing from Sonoma State University.

I have spent the last 5 years teaching college-level courses in art related subjects. Classes I have taught include: Sacred Art & Poetry, World Arts and Culture, and The Art of Journaling. These classes have all included hands-on components in drawing, painting or bookmaking.

English

I have taught English and composition for the last 6 years at the college level. These have been basic classes which focus on fundamental writing skills. For younger students, I have provided individual tutoring in phonemic awareness (elementary-middle school students) and high-school language arts and SAT prep.

Painting

I earned an MFA from California College of the Arts in printmaking. I also hold a bachelor's degree in Drawing from Sonoma State University.

Reading

I have worked with students of all ages on phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency and comprehension. I have been trained in the Lindamood-Bell system to achieve these goals.

Reading is one of my favorite things to do (professionally and in my spare time). I delight in helping others discover the magic of reading well.

SAT Reading

I have 6 years of experience teaching SAT Reading and Writing sections. I will show you the tricks to score higher and have fun while you're doing it. As a college professor, I am very familiar with the skills necessary to succeed in college, so I can also offer realistic perspective on what you should continue working on even after you take the test.
