The ACT English section is somewhat-- but not entirely-- equivalent to the SAT Writing section. Both require knowledge of basic writing rules (such as correct modifier placement, subject/verb agreement, correct pronoun usage, etc.), but the ACT has a LOT more questions on punctuation, for which I have developed a handout that is clear, thorough, and on point. Motivated students have increased their English scores by as much as nine points (where the top score is 36) and there is not a single student who hasn't seen a substantial increase.
I work with student solely on the areas they need to learn, which may include strategies, though these are so much less important than they are on the SAT.
Many students have difficulty with both SAT and ACT math sections because both tests put a lot of emphasis on geometry, which the typical student had two or three years prior to taking the test. I work with students not only on brushing up their specific knowledge base, but also with an appropriate strategy to guarantee highest possible test scores.
In addition to experience tutoring this entire test for many years, I also hold a math credential. Most students enjoy working with me because they can see their test scores improve quickly.
Many students struggle with algebra. But it may be that the teacher's style just doesn't match the student's learning style. I help students discover their natural learning style and tailor my tutoring to match that style. Every student should have the opportunity to master this material and feel confident about their math abilities.
The CBEST consists of three sections: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing, all of which I teach on a regular basis. Whether you need help in one, two, or all three areas, I can guide you to master the subject matter and ace the test. Working with me will give you confidence you need, we'll have fun learning the material, and we can accomplish your goal quickly. I have three CA teaching credentials and I have tutored this test before. Let me help you achieve your goal.
When I became a vegetarian, I realized I had to learn how to cook if I wanted to eat well. I was veggie for 30 years, but now also eat meat. I can teach you basics, including how to organize and stock a pantry. I was also a professional baker for more than five years and still bake at home on a regular basis. My skills as a cook reflect a lifetime in the kitchen. My skills as a teacher are backed up by three California teaching credentials.
Whether your interest is COOP or HSPT, I am the tutor to help you ace the test. I have taught this material before, but what makes me stand out is that I don't just review the facts you need to know, but I focus on the test itself and appropriate strategies that enable you to get the highest score you can. Even if you have test anxiety, I can help you overcome that fear - not just for this test, but for any future test you take! Let me guide you to your best effort. Please contact me if you have any questions.
I hold a CA Multiple Subject teaching credential (in addition to math and English), which is specifically designed for Elementary School educators. My teaching style is engaging and I never condescend to my students. I understand how to speak to the level of the child, no matter what subject we're working on. In addition to helping students with the subject at hand, I provide skills applicable to all academic subjects.
Elementary Math is vital for students, as it sets the foundation on which all subsequent math classes are based. When I see high school juniors doing basic arithmetic on their fingers it makes me cringe--and I blame the teachers, not the students!
I work with young math students to be certain they feel confident in their math skills. It's not just that they learn the concepts, and have confidence, but I also instill a joy for math that serves them the rest of their lives.
Before I became a professional full-time academic tutor, I worked as a copy editor for businesses such as Dolby Laboratories (yes, that Dolby). I earned my BA in English, my MA in linguistics, and have a CA teaching credential in English. I have also created and taught a grammar class. My enthusiasm for English shows not only in what I teach, but *how* I teach it. When I was a young child, I detested reading (which I love now fervently), so I have compassion for students at all points on the reading spectrum. I am a patient tutor and students usually like working with me. I can teach reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, or any other aspect of English a student wants to learn. I'm also willing to work with adults.
Whether you are a new speaker of English, or someone looking for help with the finer points of pronunciation or grammar, I can help you. In addition to holding a CA teaching credential in English, I earned a master's degree in Linguistics at UC Berkeley. I can even help you figure out what you need to improve your English, if you don't know. Please contact me with any questions you may have.
I recently tutored a student who wanted help writing an essay about film. While I am a great writing tutor (with all the appropriate background education and experience), I am also a film aficionado and shot my own short film as an undergrad as part of a film class.
If you don't have your GED, you know how important it is to get it. I can help you succeed at this test so you can move forward with your life. I am familiar with all sections of the tests and have had tremendous success getting students to understand the material. I never talk down to my students because I have tremendous respect for people trying to take control of their own lives.
Many students struggle with geometry simply because it is not presented in a way they can understand. I bridge that gap with a variety of different teaching techniques, so everyone can "get it." I hold three CA teaching credentials, including math, and tutor geometry on a regular basis.
Before I became a tutor, I worked as a Copy Editor in the business world (e.g. Dolby Laboratories) and academia (UC Berkeley). I have created and taught a highly acclaimed Grammar Course for high school students. I teach grammar in a way that is accessible to all students, including those for whom English is a non-native tongue.
No matter what section of the GRE you need help with, I can help you succeed. My experience helping students on the GRE deserves a story. Several years ago, the first student I helped prepare for this test had been teaching English at San Ramon Valley High for two years, so she only had me help her with math. She ended up scoring higher on the math than the verbal!
ISEE is similar to the HSPT, but not exactly the same. Many students take both tests because they are applying to both private and Catholic high schools. I have experience tutoring this test and can help you do your very best.
A lifelong student of Aikido, in which I hold the rank of shodan (black belt), I have experience teaching group classes as well as individuals (and couples!). I have taught both children and adults, including those with physical disabilities. Whether a student simply wants to learn some self-defense techniques or is interested in pursuing Aikido simply for the pleasure of it, I can tailor my teaching accordingly.
I have been using MS Excel since it first came out; currently I use it on a daily basis. In addition to understanding a lot of what it is capable of, I have in my arsenal a lot of unusual shortcuts that will save you time whenever you use Excel.
The most common fear in America is not dying, but public speaking! My experience helping people overcome this fear is broad--from helping aspiring teachers to would-be actors to business presenters. I have developed specific exercises and practices that enable the speaker to focus on the content, not the delivery.
Preparing for the Math section of the SAT can be frustrating, as there is a heavy emphasis on geometry, which many students take two or more years prior to taking the SAT. In addition to reviewing key concepts necessary for this test, I teach multiple strategies so every student is confident when they walk in the door on test day. Students can also transfer these strategies to classroom tests.
Many students have trouble with the SAT Reading section because they do not read for pleasure. While adding reading to a student's daily activities is great, not all students have time. There are specific techniques I teach that help students (whether they read or not) significantly increase their SAT Reading scores.
The SAT essay is unique in that it requires a student to produce a final draft of an essay in just 25 minutes. I have developed a strategy that makes this easy to do with just a little bit of practice.
For students who need help with the multiple choice questions of the SAT Writing Section, I offer no-nonsense approaches and am ready to teach the necessary grammar in a way that sticks even beyond the test. I have developed and taught a highly acclaimed grammar class--I make grammar rules fun (i.e., as much fun as they can be for grammarphobes).
As its name implies, TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) tests a student's basic knowledge of both math and language concepts. Not only do I have three CA teaching credentials (including math and English), but I have many years' experience tutoring students for many different tests just like this (ACT, SAT, CAHSEE, GRE, and more). I help students not only so they can get through this test, but so the knowledge remains with them. I am a patient, caring, and successful tutor.
Students have difficulty with writing assignments for many different reasons, including procrastination, lack of confidence, dearth of grammar knowledge, inability to organize information, lack of ideas, and more. No matter what is holding a writer back, I can help them address the issue in such a way that they are empowered as writers for the rest of their lives. I have developed step-by-step strategies that break down the writing process into discrete chores that are not as daunting. I have taught grammar and writing classes. This is my area of expertise; let me help you. It's easier than you think.
I have taught yoga continually since 2001, after graduating from a year-long teacher training course with Mark Horner (in the Iyengar tradition). Since then, I have been certified to teach restorative yoga as taught by Judith Hanson Lasater. My goal working with students individually is to help them build a practice that is safe (first and foremost), interesting (to keep them practicing), and either challenging or relaxing, depending on need. If all you want is a one-time consultation--for your own practice, or to find a good class - I can help you with that too. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Namaste.
