I am a highly successful high school physics and earth science teacher and tutor since 1996. I have been certified to teach physics and earth science/geosciences in three states including California. Courses that I have taught include Conceptual Physics, General Physics, Honors Physics, Advanced Placement Physics (both Calculus and non-Calculus based), Advanced Topics in Physics, Astronomy, Earth Science/Geoscience, Meteorology, Oceanography, Algebra Readiness, Algebra I, Algebra II and Precalculus/Trigonometry.

My undergraduate education was completed at Pennsylvania State University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1983. After working in the HVAC industry as a consulting engineer, I returned to graduate school at West Chester University to complete my teaching certification in Earth Science and a Master of Education degree in Secondary Education in 1996. I first entered the teaching field in the public school setting, where I worked for four years on the east Coast before relocating to the West Coast and have been working as a high school physics/geoscience/mathematics teacher for the past twelve years. Outside of the school setting, I have had a proposal accepted by NASA for inclusion of a project that was carried into space aboard space shuttle Endeavor for ten days during mission STS-108 in 2001. I also have organized astronomical star parties to educate interested persons about astronomy and navigating the night sky. Each year that I taught Astronomy/Earth Science, I took my students on a field trip to a major science center, including the Chabot Space and Science Center (CA), Goddard Space Flight Center (MD), and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (DC) as a culminating activity for the course.

Please note the diversity of work experience that I possess, which is one of the reasons that my students are able to benefit so greatly from my teaching style. Aside from having worked as a mechanical engineer in an industrial setting, I also have worked in both the public and independent school settings. Thus, I have a multiplicity of skills to draw upon for identifying appropriate teaching methodologies for engaging students in order to maximize the effectiveness of their learning. I enjoy working with students and being able to help them achieve their maximum potential so that they, too, will experience the excitement and joy of learning to understand the physical workings of the world around us. I very much look forward to being able to help you in achieving success in your academic endeavors!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Mechanical Engineering

My undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree is in Mechanical Engineering, which I received in December, 1983, from The Pennsylvania State University. (I can provide a copy of my diploma upon request.) I also passed my EIT exam certification prior to graduating from college (which I also can provide a copy of upon request). After graduating from college, I worked for an engineering consulting firm for four years as a mechanical engineer performing load calculations, computer simulations and other engineering duties as required.

Nutrition

My graduate level Master of Education degree is in Secondary Education, which I received in May, 1996, from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Prior to earning my Master's degree, I was a Public Health major and earned 33 graduate credits in health and nutrition. (I can provide a copy of my diploma/transcript upon request.) I also passed my Public Health Comprehensive Exams prior to changing my major to Secondary Education. During and after graduating from graduate school, I served as an outreach volunteer for several non-profit organizations devoted to disease prevention through the promotion of health and nutrition education and outreach to the general public. In 2009, my work of designing a course to promote healthy diets among adolescents at the high school level was recognized and published in a nationally circulated publication.
