I have been teaching private music lessons for six years, and I am absolutely passionate about my students' success. I just completed the master of music degree program at Arizona State University, and I am looking to expand my teaching practice beyond music. I believe that I can help with just about any challenge in any subject, for elementary through high school students. As a teacher, I am very patient and kind, and I have excellent communication skills. I pride myself in being able to teach students with any learning style; with all strengths and weaknesses. I want you to succeed. Whatever it is, I'm here to help.

A couple of the most influential pedagogues for me are Maria Montessori and Frederic Chopin. Montessori is well known for her philosophy applied toward mostly elementary school students, but she also wrote about teaching music. I consider her perspective to revolve around discovery rather than instruction. I think of myself as a guide who illuminates the way for my students to see the next step clearly.

Though Chopin did not complete and publish his "Projet de Methode," it seemed that his approach was not as prescriptive as some music teachers can be. I consider his focus to be on allowing the student to find the physical approach that is most natural and free of stress, rather than force students to match an ideal. As for music methods, I have used various Alfred series, Piano Adventures, Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, as well as some Suzuki method.

Let me be your guide. Let me help you unlock your potential, in whatever subject it may be.

Alex’s subjects

Composition (Music)

I have a master's degree as well as a bachelor's degree in music composition, therefore, it is my specialty. I can teach you any style of composition that you wish to learn, but most importantly, I can teach you the basic music theory concepts necessary to find your voice as a composer or songwriter. I know what it takes to study composition in college or at a conservatory. I can help you get to the next level.

Ear Training

Part of earning the bachelor's degree in music is the mastery of ear training: the ability to listen to music and know how to write it down and play it. I have been working on this long before I studied music formally. I taught myself a lot of music just by listening to it and trying to imitate it. I can help you develop your ear training skills to a professional level.

Elementary Math

I am comfortable teaching the elementary age group and I believe that I can help with any subject.

Elementary Science

I rather liked science and I always took the opportunity to take extra science courses when I had the chance. I would love to help with elementary as well as some high school science, while helping my students gain strong study skills.

To complete the master's degree, I had to write a thesis. This is something I looked forward to because I love to think and I love to write. Anything related to English, writing, grammar, spelling, and more would be a pleasure to teach.

General Computer

I have been using computers all my life, primarily Windows, but Mac as well. I have skills beyond basic computing, I have one year of experience with the Max/MSP/Jitter object-based programming environment.

General Music

I have been lucky enough to study many aspects of music through my studies. I believe that I can help with anything musical. From theory to performance, recording, history, and more!

I love to think and I love to write. Anything related to English, writing, grammar, spelling, and more would be a pleasure to teach. I've had to do some scholarly writing to complete the degrees that I have earned.

I absolutely love the guitar and I have been playing for about eleven years. I have been teaching guitar for six years. I love all styles of guitar including classical, flamenco, blues, rock, country, and more.

I love to analyze what I read. A lot of what we do in school when we read literature is reading between the lines and being able to creatively express our ideas that we have when we read literature. I want to share that love with my students.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been using the Windows platform all my life. I am very comfortable with making presentations. I actually have fun with it! As I have mentioned before, I have been lucky enough to go beyond the basics in computer skills but I know that not everyone has the same opportunities and comfort with learning computers. I would be a very patient and clear computer teacher.

Microsoft Word

I have written many an essay on Microsoft Word and I've explored its different functions beyond the basics. I'd be happy to help in any way.

Music Production

As a composer, I have learned techniques in music recording and production for various software and hardware. I've used Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Adobe Audition, Garage Band, Ableton, and more. I can even teach you some turntable scratching techniques, if you have the gear!

Music Theory

As a composer, I love music theory. I especially love finding new ways to think of music. Of course, I want to teach you the basics, but I'll show you some experimental music while we're at it!

I studied piano performance for three years of my bachelor degree before completing the degree in composition. I have been playing piano for about 15 years. I attended several music festivals (for performance, not listening) and I have 6 years of teaching experience. I can help you learn any style of piano repertoire and improvisation. If becoming a music major is your goal, I'm your guy.

I am a lifelong learner. I love to read and I want you to share in that joy. I can help anyone with their reading and analytical writing.

Sight Singing

Sight singing is a requirement of the bachelor's and master's degree in music. I have also been singing for 9 years. Sight singing is an important skill for all musicians, not just singers.

In addition to the classical concert and electronic music I have written, I have set poems and some of the Psalms to music for solo singers and choirs. Music theory is essential for songwriting, but we can approach learning that knowledge in many ways, it does not have to be through the Western Classical tradition.

Spanish is my mother's native language. I was bilingual as a young child but I have focused on English for most of my life. Nonetheless, I took three years of Spanish in high school and I tested out of my language requirement in college.

I love to think and I love to write. Anything related to English, writing, grammar, spelling, and more would be a pleasure to teach. I've had to do some scholarly writing to complete the degrees that I have earned.
