My name is Sherry, and I'm a Dean's List student at San Diego State University in the last semester of a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology and Africana Studies. I have tutored for a total 6 years in a variety of subjects from percussion to math lessons.

My main focus is to ensure a complete understanding from my students as well as an in-depth understanding of particular skills for future use. I also have 5 years experience of babysitting/personal nannying, so I am very focused on connecting with my students on a personal level to ensure they are in a comfortable learning environment rather than the possibly intimidating environment at school.

I work with students of all ages, as I thoroughly enjoy working with others. I would love to list tutoring methods, but I cannot claim to have a particular way of working with students because I find every person learns differently, and I try to maximize students' learning potential by getting to know how each student operates and utilizing the methods I have accumulated from teachers and experience. One method I do find extremely successful is implementing organization, which I have found very important to my own academic success. By focusing on organization, I ensure that not only do students learn the material, but they also acquire skills they will be able to apply for future use.

I look forward to working with you and/or your students.

Algebra 1

In my 5 years of tutoring experience I have found that Algebra 1 is one of the most troubling subject areas for younger students. Considering this, I have tutored countless students in Algebra 1 in all classroom settings (K-11th) for all types of students. I am very aware of the fact that math is a critical skill for future academic success so I ensure that there is a concrete understanding of Algebra 1 in all of my students so that not only do they receive immediate success in their classrooms, they also receive a strong foundation for years of math to come.

Algebra 2

During my years of tutoring students I have seen that in addition to struggles in Algebra 1, struggles in Algebra 2 are very prominent among students. Typically I have tutored sophomore students in Algebra 2, but I have also tutored up grade 11 in this subject. I am very aware that Algebra 2 is a core concept for future math such as Trigonometry/Precalculus, Calculus, and Statistics. With this is mind my goal is to ensure students have a strong foundation in Algebra in order to apply knowledge to future courses as well as practical usage.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was part of an AVID tutoring program throughout high school that allowed me to participate in field trips to elementary schools and middle school for tutoring days. I started this program my freshman year and became president of the organization my Junior and Senior year. Every Monday I would present a lesson plan designed for various grades (K-6th) with activities and academic lessons for the students to my group coordinator to be approved for the next day's trip to various elementary middle schools in my high school's district. On Tuesdays I would go to the school and "take over" a classroom of any grade at the school. The grade of the students varied from week to week so it allowed me to create organized lesson plans for all grades of elementary and middle school students.

In addition to this experience, I also tutored children on an individual basis at the same schools the next day (every Wednesday). I helped roughly 9-10 kids individually throughout the day on the topic of both the teacher's choosing, as well as parental requests.

Macintosh

I am an owner of a Macbook Pro that I purchased for school. I utilize every program on my Macintosh and am more than familiar with the computer's operating system, shortcuts, programs, and more. Because my Macintosh is portable, this enables me to bring my Macbook with me to students so that I can actively show them the various possibilities of the Macintosh operating system.

Piano

I began piano lessons 12 years ago. Throughout my lessons in piano I was taught music theory, sight singing and performance. I participated in the Certificate of Merit for 6 years and received a top ranking in piano students in California. I also participated in the Southern California Fall Season recital for 6 years and received 6 consecutive gold medals for my performances. I have studied music ranging from classical to modern to jazz piano.

Public Speaking

As a student of San Diego State University I am required by the institution to take a selected number of classes on Public Speaking and Oral Communication. I have taken 4 courses on Public Speaking/Oral Communication including Oral Communication of Africana Studies. In all of which I have received very satisfactory grades.

In addition to academic experience in public speaking, I also have 4 years of practical public speaking. I was a member of a group in high school that allowed me to create lesson plans for students K-6th, which required me to not only speak, but interact and connect with my audience.

Another form of experience in public speaking that I hold is former President of the Science League in high school. In this organization group members traveled to various schools (elementary, middle, and high schools) to present science experiments and concepts to students. These presentations were in auditoriums before schools made of up to 2,000 students in which not only were we required to present fascinating experiments, we were also expected to teach and implement lesson plans in science to these large groups of students and teachers.

Study Skills

I have taken a plethora of classes on study skills during my last 3 years of high school, mostly in preparation for the SAT/ACT tests where I learned many study techniques that increase my potential. As a college student myself, I find myself having to study for many classes so I am always efficient in my studying. A professor always said "study smarter, not harder" and this saying stuck to me in tutoring others as well as studying on my own. I want to make sure other students are studying efficiently so that they utilize what they are learning. In addition to 'Smarter Studying', I have also taken many workshops on organization which has incredibly helped in many students' academic careers. Being organized among many other study skills, is one of the most essential study skills that I implement in lessons with my students as well as my own career.

Track & Field

As a former Varsity Cross Country and Track and Field runner of 4 years, I have a profound love for the sport. I began Cross Country/Track & Field 5 years ago when I promptly ran for the Varsity team. During my athletic career I received 13 inter-team awards, 40 medals from placing in races, multiple All-County Varsity and All-Channel League titles and I am a 4 time qualifier of the California Interscholastic Federation Prelims. Upon graduating High School I received 4 athletic scholarships to various colleges in the United States. Not only am I experienced in the racing aspect of the sport, I am also experienced in the fitness/training, injury, splits/statistics, nutrition, and coaching aspects of Cross Country/Track & Field. I took many of classes on each of these aspects as well as 4 years experience in coaching athletes from the ages of 4-14.

Sherry is great. Sherry tutored my daughter in Algebra 2. My daughter enjoyed the lessons and learned a great deal more from Sherry than she had being tutored by her school teacher. Sherry is very pleasant, knowlegeable, and patient. You can't go wrong with Sherry as your tutor. ...
