Adobe Flash

Adobe Flash is used to create online animations with interactive elements. Many web developers use Flash for banner advertising or creating highly visual content for their webpages.
Flash uses a scripting language called Actionscript (2.0 or 3.0) to engage the user with interactivity.
Many Flash applications are making the transfer to mobile devices with Flex, but a background in Actionscript is very important. With the implementation of HTML 5, Flash applications are still safe because they can be embedded within HTML 5 without the plug-in Flash Player.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop has become the standard for image editing and WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) graphics for print (CMYK), web graphics (RGB) and photography. This application uses bitmap technology that utilizes small bits of information called pixels that create an entire image.
Photoshop uses a layering system that can be used to composite images above or below each other. Within these layers you can add multiple effects such as filters or blending modes. Photoshop works well in cross platforming with other applications such as Illustrator, Flash, and Dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is a website authoring and editing software that incorporates a visual layout for non-programmers in HTML, Javascript, and CSS, but is also use by programmers as well.
Dreamweaver allows users to create a file management system for html, images, and CSS files for upload to a server via FTP.

Most of my website creation is developed in Dreamweaver since I am a visual learner. Most of the students I have tutored in Dreamweaver have jumped in face first without really knowing basic HTML, which becomes a frustrating experience when not knowing where to go in the code to add or edit content. CSS also plays a big role in Dreamweaver because it defines the layout and spacing between elements in your webpage. Although on Dreamweaver HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc., seem to be all the same language to the beginner, a good place to start is to understand the basic "sentence" structure of each code.
Using the "Split" view helps the web designer understand where they are in the design and in the code simultaneously, so as a new learner you have the benefit of seeing both worlds of a programmer and a designer. But in my experience beginners tend to concentrate more on "Design" view and get completely frustrated when they make edits, but then don't see the changes in the browser view. By knowing simple HTML, you can usually pinpoint where the problem may be and fix it in the code.

With the recent release of Adobe CS5.5, Dreamweaver has HTML5 coding and mobile capabilities.

Japanese

Japanese is very structured language and as English speakers, we tend to get overwhelmed by vocabulary, grammar, and idiom memorization. The writing system includes romajii (romanized characters), hiragana, katakana, and kanji (Chinese characters), but then there is whole other side of conversational Japanese that is unspoken within academic courses. I've often been told in order to learn Japanese, I have to think Japanese and that is hard to imagine when I wasn't raised there. The best way to learn Japanese is to practice and role-play in real-life situations where your vocabulary and grammar can be put to use.

Fortunately, I have lots of practice teaching low to mid level classes in Japanese and I can help illustrate how to learn Japanese from an American point of view.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
