At the age of 19, I began learning Mandarin Chinese at the United States Air Force Academy. I was immediately fascinated by the language and made mastering it a top priority in my life. My time at the Academy was cut short after I decided to move to Taiwan and provide service to the people there, while at the same time building my reading, writing, listening, and especially speaking skills in Mandarin. Now, after living there for two years, I am currently pursuing the next level of Mandarin study as an undergraduate at the University of California at San Diego by taking Mandarin classes intended for native speakers and by actively participating in Chinese and Taiwanese student clubs on campus.
My previous occupation was a teacher at a Chinese Martial Arts and Language after school program, also located in San Diego called Golden Dragon. During the fall of 2012 I studied abroad at Taiwan's best university, National Taiwanese University and was able to conduct daily language exchange with my local friends and classmates! My philosophy is that learning is limitless, and my passion for learning Mandarin has allowed me to learn it fluently over the past four years. I hope to inspire you with this same passion and as I assist in effectively helping you achieve your Mandarin Chinese language goals! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My formal study of Mandarin Chinese began in the fall of 2008 at the United States Air Force Academy. I earned A's in both the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters, as well as a 3 week cultural exploration trip to Chengdu, Xian, and Beijing, China during March of 2009 because of my outstanding academic performance.
I lived in Taizhong, Taiwan and Gaoxiong, Taiwan from November 2009 to August 2011. For two years, I spoke conversational Mandarin on a day to day basis with native speakers and spent 2 hours each day engaged in personal study to enhanced my reading, writing, as well as vocabulary skills. I also frequently wrote letters in traditional Chinese characters to friends in the country.
Upon my return to the United States in the Fall of 2011, I changed universities and started instruction at the University of California at San Diego in Mandarin Classes intended for native speakers. During the Fall 2011, Winter 2012 and Spring 2012 quarters, I earned As in my classes. From September 2011 to June 2012, I worked at a Chinese school run by natives of Shandong, China, where I was frequently used as a translator and occasionally taught Chinese to elementary school kids.
I am an active contributor to a online Chinese learning entrepreneurship and studied abroad in Taipei, Taiwan as an exchange student at National Taiwanese University during the Fall semester of 2012.
