Greetings! I am a credentialed teacher with a California CLEAR Multiple Subject (K-12) credential. My experience includes 20 years of classroom teaching as well as tutoring. I am continually inspired by the exuberance of children, although I also enjoy teaching and tutoring adults. If I can see the light of learning, the "Oh, now I get it!" in their eyes,I can sleep at night! This applies to adults as well as children. While I have enjoyed classroom teaching, my first love is one-on-one tutoring as well as small groups. I use creative approaches to existing curriculum, and have also designed original curriculum. I am dedicated to my students' success and always encourage them to do their best. Communicating the joy of learning is my goal, and I will do that patiently and professionally.
I received my undergraduate degree in Art from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and my CLEAR Multiple Subject (K-12) credential from UCLA. With 12 years of experience as a graphic artist I am also qualified to tutor art. In addition to all elementary ed. subjects, I have taught ESL to children and adults. This included 4 years of ESL teaching in a classroom setting,in Ecuador, South America, 2 years of adult ESL in a classroom situation in the Los Angeles area, as well as many years of tutoring.
I am well-versed in the California State Standards and align my lessons with those standards. At the same time, I do not believe there is a "one size fits all" approach for all students. The lessons I create are tailor-made for individual needs. I use a variety of materials and methods, and I am also more than willing to use your materials or the materials your child's teacher recommends. A relationship with your teacher or your child's teacher is an important aspect of my tutoring style; I am a team player. This means I would be willing to communicate with your teacher/child's teacher by email to learn what the student's needs are. This, of course, is only if the teacher chooses to do so. Positive reinforcement with patient encouragement are essential parts of all teaching and tutoring. These attributes and practices are part of who I am. It is a source of joy to be a part of the learning process. I would consider it a privilege to be given a role in your/your child's education.
I specialize in pencil, pen and ink, and charcoal drawing. This includes portraits, landscapes, still life, and book illustration. I enjoy teaching art to children as well as adults. Due to my art degree, which is in Fine Arts, I am able to instruct according to established methods. However, I prefer to promote creativity and "thinking outside the box." There is not only one correct way to do art. To me, art is an expression that comes from within the individual and is only assisted by the teacher. It is an experience that should be enjoyed, and this is always my wish for my students.
14 of my 20 years of teaching have been in Elementary Ed. (K-6), specifically Kindergarten-3rd grade. In addition to classroom teaching of all subjects, I have tutored individual students and small groups in Reading, Grammar, Phonics, Writing, Language Arts, ESL, and Math. The small group levels (usually 4-6 students) have ranged from high functioning (proficient-advanced) to below grade level. The proficient-advanced groups have worked on challenging enrichment assignments. For the below grade level groups, I have worked on discovering their needs and helping them to progress toward grade level. It is so exciting to see a student's self confidence improve, whether in a small group or in an individual session.
I taught ESL in a classroom situation for 4 years in Ecuador, South America. In addition my experience includes classroom ESL in the US for 2 years, as well as individual tutoring. I use a variety of materials and seek to adapt my methods to the needs of the student. Use of your materials or mine, or a combination of both, is fine with me. I would begin with a needs assessment at the first session, and we would move on from there.
Watercolor, tempera, and acrylic are my preferred painting mediums. I have a Fine Arts degree, and am comfortable with customary methods as well as nontraditional. One of my favorite less traditional projects with children is painting with cotton swabs (Q-tips). However, I also really enjoy watercolor with brushes, as do my students. My lessons begin with the basics, including how to take care of the brush, how much water to use, the different types of strokes and methods of brushwork, types of watercolor paper, and various kinds and sizes of brushes. As we move into the actual painting portion of the lesson, I stress the importance of fluid, free motions, filling the space, and making the picture their own. Most important, I try to make it fun!
I have used various methods of teaching phonics. Open Court is an excellent curriculum which I used particularly with kindergarten. I have also used Houghton Mifflin for several years with K-3rd grades. In addition, I have supplemented and modified existing curricula according to the needs of the students. A great example of supplementary material which I have utilized for phonics as well as other subjects is Spectrum. Teacher-created materials, created by myself and my fellow teachers also enhance the learning. I will put together what I believe to be the best plan for your child or for you. It will always be a work in progress: we can always change it if necessary.
During my years of teaching, I attended a Writing Academy facilitated by well-known teacher/lecturer, Katherine Casey. I then piloted the writing program for my team of teachers as well as my students. As part of the academy, we were to produce our own writing samples. All lessons were presented in accordance with the California State Standards for Writing. Lessons included fictional, informational, expository, narrative, descriptive, summary, and persuasive writing. I also participated in other writing training opportunities such as Write Up a Storm and Houghton Mifflin. All of the above training was implemented during Writer's Workshop in my classroom. Writing is very enjoyable for me, and I love communicating that joy to my students.
Very patient — I knew at once this would work. I was comfortable with Ms Anne, but most importantly at the end of lesson my daughter said she liked her. I liked the fact that I didnt have to dig for information regarding lesson. She immediately told me where my daughters problem area was. Thank you Ms Anne. ...
