I am an experienced woodwind player. My specialties are clarinet
, bassoon and flute
. I have played for fifty years in many musical environments, including chamber music
, studio sessions, military bands, jazz gigs, and symphony orchestras. I have taught lessons for thirty years. In addition to this, I have taken many psychology
classes, and have been in the classroom, both music and otherwise, including special education. For ten years (1981-1992) I was the woodwind coach for the Valley Youth Orchestra at California State University, Northridge.
For the past ten years, I have devoted my energies solely to teaching private lessons. Several of my clarinet, bassoon and oboe students have been accepted into the California All-State Band.
Having played so much, I teach by example. I try to find good things in the student and build on them. I have trained under the best players in the world, and teach only accepted techniques. At the same time, I realize that some techniques take time to learn. I usually will only take one aspect at a time to keep the lesson coherent. An example might be a fingering technique where there are two choices. But one will be preferred for the key signature of the specific piece.
I have been making reeds my whole life, and there is a point in a student's progress where I teach reed making for double reeds, and reed adjustment for single reeds.
I talk to my students. I want to know who they are. And I want them to know who I am. I believe that a lesson works as well as the communication in the lesson.
