Greetings! I am a credentialed teacher with a California CLEAR Multiple Subject (K-12) credential. My experience includes 20 years of classroom teaching as well as tutoring. I am continually inspired by the exuberance of children, although I also enjoy teaching and tutoring adults. If I can see the light of learning, the "Oh, now I get it!" in their eyes,I can sleep at night! This applies to adults as well as children. While I have enjoyed classroom teaching, my first love is one-on-one tutoring as well as small groups. I use creative approaches to existing curriculum, and have also designed original curriculum. I am dedicated to my students' success and always encourage them to do their best. Communicating the joy of learning is my goal, and I will do that patiently and professionally.
I received my undergraduate degree in Art from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and my CLEAR Multiple Subject (K-12) credential from UCLA. With 12 years of experience as a graphic artist I am also qualified to tutor art. In addition to all elementary ed. subjects, I have taught ESL to children and adults. This included 4 years of ESL teaching in a classroom setting,in Ecuador, South America, 2 years of adult ESL in a classroom situation in the Los Angeles area, as well as many years of tutoring.
I am well-versed in the California State Standards and align my lessons with those standards. At the same time, I do not believe there is a "one size fits all" approach for all students. The lessons I create are tailor-made for individual needs. I use a variety of materials and methods, and I am also more than willing to use your materials or the materials your child's teacher recommends. A relationship with your teacher or your child's teacher is an important aspect of my tutoring style; I am a team player. This means I would be willing to communicate with your teacher/child's teacher by email to learn what the student's needs are. This, of course, is only if the teacher chooses to do so. Positive reinforcement with patient encouragement are essential parts of all teaching and tutoring. These attributes and practices are part of who I am. It is a source of joy to be a part of the learning process. I would consider it a privilege to be given a role in your/your child's education.
