I am a PhD student in physics at the University of California, Irvine.

I am also pursuing a low-residency MFA in writing at Converse College, piecewise. I have completed two semesters of MFA coursework so far, but I have put the rest on hold until I complete my physics PhD.

I have taught four quarters of freshman physics for physics and engineering majors, and one additional quarter of the physics of music, for general education students. The latter is primarily a writing class, so it has been my pleasure to teach students about both physics and english, and help them develop quantitative skills as well as strong writing abilities.

I have also taken a quarter-long class on teaching methods as a TA at UCI, and I work regularly with other TAs to develop effective techniques of teaching and facilitating understanding of challenging concepts.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Astronomy

My undergraduate work in physics was focused on theoretical astrophysics. My final thesis explored the indirect detection of dark matter and culminated in a paper published in the Journal of Physics G.

My current graduate research work involves gamma-ray observations with the Fermi Collaboration.

English

I hold a B.A. in English, and I am working towards my M.F.A. in writing. As the editor of a college literary publication, I have four years of experience teaching writers how to present material worthy of publishing. I also have a further two years of workshop experience providing writers with constructive critiques of their work.

Physics

As a PhD student in physics, I have taught five quarters of physics classes geared towards both physics majors and non-majors. My students have been very responsive and have thrived under my guidance, with some even wishing that I was their professor rather than just their TA. Apart from the classes I teach, I spend 3-4 hours per week tutoring students one-on-one at UCI's physics tutoring center.

Proofreading

I worked as an editor for my alma mater's literary publication during my first three years in college, and as editor-in-chief during the last one. As a result, my reading and proofreading skills are excellent.

Reading

My reading experience is varied and extensive, ranging from scientific writing to poetry.

Writing

I have a keen eye for efficient yet engaging writing, and I am very good at training students to recognize and effectively employ the elements of style and rhetoric in their work. I was awarded the Wheeler Poetry Prize for excellence in poetry writing during my senior year of college. My writing workshop classmates routinely find my critiques of their work to be very useful.

I am also proficient in scientific and non-fiction writing; my thesis work in physics is published in the Journal of Physics G.
