Hi, everyone! Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile! My name is Erin and I was born and raised in Irvine, CA! I've attended some of the best schools in California and in the nation - Bonita Canyon Elementary, Rancho San Joaquin Middle School, University High School, UCLA, and UCI. My broad academic background includes a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology from UCLA as well as a TEFL/TESL certificate from UCI to teach and tutor non-native English speakers.
I love kids and come from a large family- I have 3 sisters, 1 brother, and a Yorkie named Rocco who is very friendly and loves sleeping and treats! In my spare time I listen to all kinds of music and I love dancing, jogging, swimming, and yoga. I have traveled to Japan, England, France, Italy, Mexico, and have been on many road trips throughout the US - so my knowledge of foreign cultures is extensive. I speak some Spanish and French, and have friends who try to teach me Farsi and perfect my foreign language capabilities.
I volunteered for two school years at Marina del Rey Middle School where I mentored 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and I mentored a "study buddy" to help with homework, test preparation, and study skills. We even played games indoor and outdoors, did pumpkin carving for Halloween, and attended a UCLA Bruins Football game!
I have a passion for learning and for teaching others! I have extensive training from UCI where I was able to spend 200+ hours learning teaching methods for one-on-one and group/classroom. I have been trained on test-taking and different types of examinations including, but not limited to, TOEFL, SAT, ACT, GRE, STAR, Scantron, multi-subject, single-subject, written, and oral tests, and have created my own test preparation coursework and materials. I have studied grammar, linguistics, and phonics - which are all passions of mine and subjects that I enjoy teaching/tutoring. I am also a fan of using technology in the classroom to aid the learning experience through music, video shorts, and blogging to reach a wider audience. I like to use a variety of methods in the classroom to make learning fun, yet still structured and purposeful. In my experience, the best teachers and tutors I've had have been memorable and have made a lasting impression. I use a variety of ice-breakers for the student and I to get to know each other, to build trust and confidence so the learning process can be most efficient. I truly value education and all that it has to offer!
I am planning on pursuing a Masters Program in Communications and Linguistics and feel that tutoring is the best way to stay current with new teaching methods and school curriculum.
Join me for life and learning adventures!
