Throughout high school, I tutored my peers in math, English, chemistry, and physics. During my senior year of high school, I helped my math teacher during her after school tutoring sessions by sitting down with my classmates and reviewing difficult concepts in pre-calculus that they had a hard time understanding during class. I am now a senior at the University of California, Irvine and I am majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in Finance. I currently help my roommate with his math classes, tutor a friend at the University of California, Santa Barbara in physics over the phone and through text, and edit essays of friends from a variety of schools. I believe that knowing and understanding a subject is one thing, but teaching it to someone else in an effective manner is something else.
Albert Einstein once said, “If you can't explain something simply, you don't understand it well enough.” Over the years, I have taken this approach and applied it to tutoring. I relate complex topics to simpler topics in order for the tutee to truly understand the basics before tackling the more difficult subjects. By relating a complex problem to a more elementary one, students can obtain a better understanding of what the problem really means and what the problem is asking. This method worked with my peers throughout high school, and I continue to use it till today.
