As a Professional and Credentialed Teacher, I am dedicated to helping students achieve their highest potential. I believe that a successful tutoring experience includes using a variety of teaching techniques and being creative in preparing lesson plans to meet the unique needs of each student.

I have taught English (including Speaking, Phonics, Vocabulary development, Grammar, Writing and Public Speaking), Social Studies and related History classes to students of all ages, from 1st graders to adults. I have also taught ESL to both children and adults from countries around the world. My undergraduate degree in Social Science from Chapman University and a CLAD Teaching Credential that emphasized Cross-Cultural Studies, have enabled me to better understand the students I am teaching.

In addition, I have many years of experience in the business world, both as an employee and a teacher. I have served as a mentor to new employees, teaching them "the ropes" and helping them to adapt to the cultural climate of the company. I have taught Microsoft Word and Excel in the local adult school, teaching ESL students and the general public.

Over the past year I have been teaching Business Writing & Oral Communication to both individuals and groups of employees. Orange County is comprised of a very culturally diverse population. I love helping professionals improve their English Language skills for the business environment. I have experience teaching visiting scientists and doctors at UCI, business professionals working in the IT and High Technology fields, and those working in Administrative, Marketing and Sales positions.

For me, teaching is a Passion--I love the process and the end result of seeing the happy faces of success! I believe that teaching is most worthwhile when experienced in a creative, challenging, yet fun environment. I look forward to working with you!

Business

I spent many years working in the business sector, employed by both small to medium sized companies and large billion dollar corporations. My experience has included positions in Finance, Accounting, Administration, Sales, and Management. I understand the need for running a "tight ship" and the importance of keeping accurate and current accounting records. I have experience with various accounting software programs and most recently with QuickBooks.

Elementary (K-6th)

I possess a Multiple Subject CLAD Clear Teaching Credential and have taught all grade levels of elementary school. I have taught in both the regular school setting and in after school programs. My expertise is in English language development, Social Science, History & Science. I have taught many ESL classes for students recently arrived in the U.S. and for those requiring extra attention. Most recently I have been teaching in a tutoring center working within a multi-cultural setting.

ESL/ESOL

I have over 10 years experience teaching all levels of ESL/ESOL in both classroom and private settings, to students from countries around the world. I have taught Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Levels with focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary development (including idiomatic expressions), pronunciation & phonics, listening skills, grammar & writing. I have a Clear Teaching Credential with emphasis on Cross-Cultural Language & Academic Development.

Phonics

Learning English sounds is critical to the development of speaking clearly. Teaching phonics (sounding out of words) includes a variety of topics from understanding how to divide words into syllables, to focusing on consonant digraphs (two consonant sounds together form one sound), to dipthongs (same sounds, different spellings), to many other aspects important to learning the English language. Non-native speakers often have problems with the "r" controlled sounds, with distinguishing between "v" and "b" sounds, and with digraphs. This is usually the result of not understanding how to use the tongue and mouth to create sounds. As a credentialed teacher, I have had great success with helping students to improve their speaking skills.

Proofreading

I am excellent at proofreading and editing papers. I have an eye for spotting errors in spelling, punctuation and wording. I am also very good at making sure your writing is well organized. Over the years I have helped both students and business people achieve success with their written work. Let me help you too!

Public Speaking

I have helped many students overcome their fears of speaking in front of a group. My motto is "Be very well prepared." I teach students to research their subjects thoroughly, to write notes on note cards to use on the day of the speech, and to practice as much as possible before that important day. Students don't want to memorize verbatim when giving a speech, but need to know the subject well that they will be talking about. Ad-libbing might work well for actors or comedians, but it can prove disastrous for the ordinary individual.

Reading

I have loved to read since I was very young. My friends used to call me a "bookworm." It didn't bother me, because I always found such joy and escape in reading! I love reading just about anything: magazines, newspapers, junk mail (don't laugh!) and novels of a variety of genres, from the classics to mysteries, to any thought-provoking subject! Find the right subject and you'll learn to love reading too!

Study Skills

Developing solid study skills is critical for success in school and in life. I have found that three of the most important tools are: goal setting, organization, and time management. Students often approach studying in a haphazard manner, overlooking the importance of planning or organization. I have many years experience helping students develop their study skills. My students have improved their grades and their ability to concentrate and remember important facts. I guide my students through the process and assist them in establishing a system most effective for their purposes. I stress the importance of taking good care of themselves by getting enough sleep and eating a nutritional diet. No one can absorb new thoughts and subject matter when hungry or exhausted. Students also need to learn to curb any procrastination--this is the bane of good study habits.

Writing

Writing has been a life-long passion of mine. Whether I am writing for personal pleasure (journals, poems, or short articles),or helping others with essays, theses, manuscripts, or job related materials, I am meticulous about the entire process. Everything from word choice, to sentence structure, to punctuation is essential to create a polished piece of writing. I have helped many people improve their writing skills. Currently I teach writing at an after school educational center. In addition, I privately tutor both high school and college students and adults, those active in various professions and those simply wishing to improve their personal correspondence.
