About me:
I hold an undergraduate degree from Cornell University and a Master's in English from the University of Washington. I have taught English courses at the university level since 2005, and I have tutored all sections of the SAT since 2007. I currently teach at UC Irvine in the Academic English/ESL program, but I have continued working as a tutor because I love working one-on-one with students and because I also love teaching math differently than the way it is taught in high schools.
SAT tutoring services:
Bright students sometimes do poorly on the SAT - I've seen this many times, and I've helped many of them boost their scores by more than 300 points. The SAT, no matter what anyone tells you, IS NOT a good measure of a student's ability in Critical Reading, Writing, or Math.
What the test does measure is simply how good a student is at taking the SAT. I'll help your student beat the test with strategies, tips, and tricks that are found in many test prep books, and with many that aren't. Here's a freebie for the math: use fractions, not decimals. Fractions simplify your calculations, and they make relationships between quantities far more apparent.
High School English, Writing, and Math tutoring services:
Fully capable students often slip through the cracks at school - either because of class sizes, uninspiring teaching methods, or teaching methods that don't meet your child's needs.
On the other hand, some students are learning at a level far beyond their peers, and their teacher just doesn't have the time or resources to help them continue to excel in their interests.
I can help both types of students. I have taught at the University of Washington, Clark Community College, and even in the Portland High Schools. As an undergraduate, while majoring in English, I also completed advanced coursework in Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Evolutionary Biology. I love learning, and I love teaching. No matter what your student's interests are, no matter what their learning style is, I can offer highly individualized tutoring that will help your child reach their full academic potential by teaching them not only the material, but also how to learn, and how to enjoy learning.
