Hello! I am currently a UC Berkeley student on extended leave for personal reasons. I am a geography major who is also a pre-med student and has finished 3 years at Cal. I earned high marks in high school and took many AP classes, so I've experienced first hand how to take on those types of courses. I am also an accomplished piano player, with more than 12 years' experience. I completed the Certificate of Merit program through level Advanced, which also means I am proficient with music theory. I am an avid photographer and videographer, and have had experience with freelance work in both fields. I am especially strong in history and biology, math up to Algebra II, and some chemistry. I received high marks on the SAT's, and can give helpful tips and supplemental material for preparation in addition to the usual tutoring.
I have had experience, both as tutor and tutee, on multiple occasions. I understand the frustration students may feel when one does not understand a subject. I value one-on-one teaching, a step by step approach, and having the student help themselves. I do not believe in simply giving out the answer, and I wish for the student to understand the concept. I found these approaches have always helped me in understanding a concept the best. I do understand, however, that each student is different and has different needs, and am more than willing to tailor my teaching methods to you or your student. I have been tutored by professional institutions as well as private, at-home tutors. I have tutored high school students in general chemistry and math. These particular sessions were focused on day to day homework assistance, as well as exam prep. My peers were able to walk away fully understanding the concept and did well on their exams. I have also tutored younger students in English as a second language, and later on math, where I reviewed with them using various ways including games, which kept them engaged much longer. I have also edited various high school students' papers, both for assignments as well as college applications. I also worked as editor in chief of my high school's newspaper where much of the editing was done by me due to our small staff.
With every student I've had the pleasure of working with, I always take a one on one approach. I like having the student try out problems first so we can identify where he/she has an issue. From there, I like taking a step by step approach, giving the student a chance to figure out the problem themselves with some guidance. I have often received compliments for simplifying complex concepts to bite size analogies and examples that demystifies a subject. I like having a relaxing environment as I do not believe pressure is conducive to learning when somebody is already frustrated with trying to understand a subject.
I look forward to working with you, and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
I completely revamped and relaunched my high school newspaper back when I was a junior after becoming editor-in-chief. I brought the program's attention to InDesign and subsequently taught myself how to use it. We successfully issued several papers using InDesign and the paper was complimented about its professional look.
I am an American born Chinese who has spoken Mandarin Chinese at home my entire life. I also attended Chinese school on weekends since I was 7 up until I graduated high school. I then took another semester of university level Chinese at UC Berkeley.
I am an instructor for a student lead class on being a pre-med at UC Berkeley. We not only invite guest speakers from various backgrounds, but also have a group of about 20ish students whom we advise throughout the semester and sometimes beyond. We meet with these students one on one if they wish and give tips on scheduling, field of study, etc. We also edit and review papers that are required for the course. We offer a lot of guidance for students who are both struggling to find a place at the university and their career choice, as well as guidance to those who are certain of their futures.
I am an avid photographer and cinematographer. I film events for fellow student groups in and around campus, as well as make my own shorts. I have recently just finished a video workshop class which I excelled in and was a top student. I am comfortable with basic lighting, DSLR usage, camera movements, direction, editing, sound recording and editing, etc. I am proficient with iMovie and Final Cut Pro X. I have also taken a few courses on film history, and the great directors of cinema, excelling in both. We viewed and analyzed films from the Lumiere brothers until modern day cinema.
I own a mid-2009 MacBook Pro which I have used consistently for the past 4.5 years. I use the macbook for everything from completing papers to producing short films. I have also used older and the newest models of iMacs from time to time, primarily to edit media.
Along with my MacBook Pro, I have a Windows 7 desktop computer at home. I also regularly use a Windows 7 HP laptop computer. I am more comfortable with troubleshooting XP and Vista systems, however I am still very familiar with the 7 operating system. I used Windows for 12 years, before I started also using OSX.
I am an avid photographer, and have been actively photographing subjects for at least 3 years. I use a Nikon D5100, though I am familiar with Canon 60Ds and Rebel series. I often volunteer my services to friends and families, along with student groups on campus. I have experience taking portraits, event photography, and candids. My two primary lenses are the 18-200mm zoom lens and 35 mm f/1.8 prime lens. I also have experience with reflectors and speedlights. Along with this, I have also just recently taken a basic digital photography course to cover any topics I may have missed while teaching myself, and also to receive more critique on my work. My photographs were chosen nearly every single time we had them out on display for special recognition. I am largely self taught, and therefore can explain many areas that may cause confusion.
I have been classically trained on the piano since I was 5 and had private, 1-on-1 lessons from award winning teachers. I went through California's Certificate of Merit program, passing level advanced. This means I have also had training in music theory, sight reading, and ear training.
I am a UC Berkeley student who has been in GATE, Honors, and AP programs during grade school. The years of grade school training, along with 3 years of pre-medical university training has allowed me to hone my study skills. I have experimented with many study methods including note taking styles, group vs individual studying, different learning styles, etc.
