I received my Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 2008. I then received my Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from Mills College in 2011. I am currently pursuing a career as a Registered Nurse and am interested in gaining more experience in one-on-one or small group instruction.
My interest in reaching out to my community is apparent in my volunteer work as well as in my teaching experience. In the fall of 2008, I designed and facilitated a poetry workshop at the Women’s Empowerment Breakthrough. This allowed me to work with teenage women (ages 14 to 18) to use poetry as a means for self-expression.
I also volunteered at a high school. During my time there, I served as an assistant for the revision process for fiction writing. This allowed me the opportunity to work with individual students, assess their needs, and nurture them as writers. While I was at the high school, I also developed and led a poetry lesson. For this, I was given a suggestion for a lesson, and then had the freedom to create the first poetry lesson for a high school English class. I was able to receive feedback on my lesson from both my supervisor and the students, which helped me refine techniques. My supervisor praised me for my engagement and enthusiasm with the students and my students praised me for creating a lesson that was both enjoyable and educational.
I had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant at Mills College. Throughout the academic year, I worked with undergraduate students in the senior thesis in Creative Writing class. This experience allowed me to design and facilitate class sessions. I provided the students with writing exercises and then guided them as they gave feedback to one another. My supervisor praised me for my choice in writing exercises and my ability to lead the class. I also had the chance to structure weekly small group meetings and weekly meetings with individual students. These sessions were an opportunity to structure feedback and conversation to suit each student’s needs. My students praised me for thorough and useful guidance.
In addition to my formal training in English, I have a strong passion for the sciences, as demonstrated by my current coursework in pre-nursing classes. I believe in an interdisciplinary approach to all subjects and want to promote strong educational values, as well as good study skills and time management.
Through my experiences, I have discovered my passion for working with individuals, especially young adults. I have also developed my skills as a facilitator and instructor. Thank you for your time and consideration.
