All of Steven’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Steven’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

American History

I minored in History at San Diego State University. It's one of my favorite subjects. I have taken courses in Modern European History from the Congress of Vienna to WWI; History of Mexico; and American History, among others.

English

Obviously, as a native speaker of English, and someone who majored in English at SDSU, I love my language! It is perhaps the most expressive language in the world. Of the 6,000+ languages in the world, English is fast becoming its Lengua Franca, i.e., the language that others use to speak to one another when they are not familiar with each others' first languages. English is used in the maritime and aviation fields.

ESL/ESOL

I am very close to having finished a Masters degree in TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) at Cal. State. Univ. Dominguez Hills. I should finish sometime in 2014. I taught ESL/ESOL/TOEFL in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District from 2006 until 2011, when the program was greatly reduced because of budget shortfalls.

General Computer

I have been working with computers since the early 1980's. I have taught individuals how to use their computer on occasion and those people have always progressed in their knowledge of computers.

Geography

I have traveled widely in Europe, the USA, and Mexico and am very familiar with the subject. It's one of my favorite intellectual pursuits.

Grammar

As a Graduate Student in the ESL Department at CSU Dominguez Hills, I was required to take and pass the Graduate Writing Exam (GWE) before I could be considered for a Masters. A score of 8 or higher is required to pass the GWE, with 12 being the highest possible score. I received a score of 9. Test takers are graded on their knowledge of English grammar, as well as their ability to write coherently and creatively.

Literature

English literature was my major at San Diego State University. I enjoyed it immensely and carried a 3.1 GPA throughout my college years.

Microsoft Word

I have been using Microsoft Word since the early 80's. I use it almost daily in my school work and online. I can be of great help to the beginner and intermediate learner.

Proofreading

I have been a professional proofreader on many occasions in the past. It's something I enjoy very much. In my opinion, English prose is beautiful when it is correctly written.

Reading

As a teacher of English as a Second Language, (ESL), in the Newport-Mesa USD, teaching students to read is a high priority. I liked the process and students often told me they enjoyed having me teach them reading,

SAT Writing

It's been a few years since I took the SAT exam, but feel I'm very well qualified to prepare any student for the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Spanish

I took several semesters of Spanish classes in high school and college and always received A's and B's. I'm repeatedly told by native speakers of Spanish that I speak Spanish with almost no English accent at all and speak it quite fluently. I have lived in Mexico and Spain in the past.

TOEFL

This is my passion. I am in the process of earning a Masters degree in TOEFL (Teaching Of English as a Foreign Language) at CSU Dominguez Hills and expect to finish by Spring, 2014, possibly sooner. To date, 12/18/12, I've finished seven of the dozen classes required to obtain that Masters degree.

Vocabulary

This is another of my very strong subjects. I received a 91% score on the test I took through Wyzant, this tutoring organization.

World History

I'm also passionate about this subject. It was my minor area of study in college. As George Santayana said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I believe it is possibly the most important intellectual pursuit anyone can engage in.

Writing

As a candidate for a Masters degree in TOEFL (Teaching Of English as a Foreign Language), I am required to take and pass the GWE (Graduate Writing Exam) before I can be granted my degree. I have taken and passed the GWE with a score of 9. A score of 8 or higher is required to pass the test. 12 is the highest possible score one can achieve.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
