I am currently available for online tutoring through WyzAnt's innovative teaching platform. I have an M.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan.

Since retiring from Rohm & Haas as a chemist and statistician, I have been a substitute teacher in Mathematics in the Huntington Beach Union High School District and tutored middle school, high school and college students.

Tutoring to Middle School and High School students includes Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, AP Statistics and Chemistry.

Tutoring to College Students includes Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Advanced Calculus, Advanced Statistics, and using Group Theory of Character Tables to construct molecular orbitals.

My approach to teaching is to (i) emphasize the fundamentals, (ii) develop student confidence by reviewing concepts already understood, (iii) train the student to think how to solve new problems based on prior knowledge, and (iv) offer students my advice from years of experience.

John has helped me a lot with the basics of College Chem I. I feel assured that I have learned a lot from him. He is very knowledgeable, patient, and timely with arrival. I definitely recommend his services!

Hi Lauren,

Thank you for the recommendation!

My cell phone has been out of service since last Friday. So, until it is replaced, I can only be reached through the WyzAnt email.

Thanks again,

John B

John is enthusiastic about his work, and cares about his students. The breadth of the concepts that he covers is impressive, ranging from physics, chemistry, calculus - with a little economics thrown in for good measure. My son is working with him on Skype, and looks forward to the lessons. This is brilliant!

Hi. My name is Ivette. I hired John to tutor my daughter for Algebra 1 and 2. John is very punctual and very nice. I asked my daughter what she thought about John's tutoring methods and she stated that he very good and is able to explain things in a way she understands. She stated that even though she's been working with John for only a few days, she feels confident she will be passing her upcoming exam.

My child's Alg2/Trig AP grade needed to be raised to the next grade level (something like 6-10%...hard to say precisely as there were always ungraded/unrecorded items outstanding) with only 6 weeks remaining in school year. Thanks to John, we achieved that goal with room to spare. John's approach is methodical -- he pinpoints the specific areas where your child needs help, and provides that. Sometimes teachers/textbooks focus more on the mechanics of problem solving without enough time/attention given to the underlying concepts (especially in fast-moving advanced/AP/HP classes). My child generally understood how to solve problems mechanically (and could often do so); however, without a firm foundational grasp, it was difficult to apply that knowledge to more complicated/abstract situations. This was especially true when translating word problems into soluble equations. John provided the missing foundational knowledge, which in turn allowed the mechanical problem-solving to be more successfully (and quickly) applied. John was also very flexible in meeting our scheduling needs. We only had a small number of test opportunities remaining in the year, so preferred to have sessions the night before to maximize "freshness"; unfortunately, tests were often announced only a day or two in advance. With short notice, John always did his best to find some amount of time meet our needs. I wasn't looking for some Dead Poets wannabe to put the Joy of Math into my child; I needed someone who could help bring my child's grade up significantly in a short time. John did just that.

My daughter only started with John for a week and we already saw an improvement in her understanding of concepts in both Precalculus and Chemistry which John helps her with. There was a great improvement in her test scores after only a week with John. We hope this keeps up! John shows mastery of these subjects, comes prepared and explains the concepts in the simplest way possible. He is also pretty flexible with the schedule.

John has provided my son with a full of tips list which has helped him to find a methodology to approach each problem and get a neat, clear and positive solution to each problem, besides my son is more confident on understanding the Algebra 2 concepts. After the first two hours tutoring session with John, my son got a higher grade in his next test. Thanks John, see you soon again.

John is a very patient and thorough tutor. He understands the problem areas and where the stumbling blocks are for different concepts. My daughter is in Algebra !! and many problems are multi-step. John provides problems that allow for my daughter to walk herself through the process of problem solving so that her confidence, skill level and pace all increase.

John is an excellent tutor! John has a way of keeping my son interested in what he is learning, my son likes his time with him. My son and I feel that we are getting a lot of bang for our buck.

Thank you so much for your kind response. I also enjoy working with your son, and together, I have no doubt we will create an improvement in his math grades.

John was very patient with my son and gave him the attention needed. My son's first Algebra II test was today, since seeing John, and his comment was, "that was easier than I thought it would be and I had 20 minutes left." He usually runs out of time during his exams!

He will reach out and research the topics before you met him during a session. He goes the material in depth and checks to make sure you understand. He is friendly, on-time, and is happy to go over the material with you. He is willing to drive far to meet your needs and will try his best to accommodate you in his schedule. I would recommend him as a tutor.

Thank you for your kind review!

He makes sure you understand the concepts to the fullest extent. Works the problems methodically, step by step. Although this was my first lesson, I feel as if I am going on the right track in my decision to hire John.

John is very responsible and efficient. He was very helpful to my son to catch him up with his algebra. My son said he was patient and supportive.

He is very good. He is patient. He emails me with definitions and breaks down the problems for me.

Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have an M.S. in mathematics. I have tutored students taking the ACT.
