I have been tutoring for 19 years. I started out at Goldenwest college in their math/computer lab and also their music department since I have degrees in both music and computer science with a minor in math. I taught math at Coastline Community College and also tutored Statistics for that department. I enjoy tutoring since I can evaluate a student's learning style and work with them individually to be most effective in getting the concepts across. I find it rewarding to build a student's confidence which then results in higher test scores.
I have tutored for the ACT and SAT English tests that help students get into college. It is important that the student know how to take these tests and how they are scored. There is so much pressure on students today to score high on these tests and I am happy to help them do their best.
The ACT Math test determines the student's knowledge and aptitude for solving problems from algebra to statistics. It is used to get into the universities so it is important that the student review a wide range of processes and know how the test is scored.
The ACT Reading test indicates the level of reading comprehension achieved by the student in order to get into the university. It is important that a student practice these tests to get a feel for what they are looking for.
Algebra 1 is so important to really understand because the following math classes all build on these type of processes. I enjoy teaching this math so much because I can see a student gain confidence in the ability to do math that is abstract and more than just basic math. I received a 100% in the New York State Regents Algebra Exam when I was a freshman in high school.
I tutor a lot of Algebra 2 and help geometry students get back into algebra mode. It takes concepts deeper than algebra 1 with graphing, matrices, logarithms, etc. in order to prepare for pre-calculus. It is so important for students to have good skills and knowledge of these concepts before going on to the calculus courses.
I took the qualification test to tutor ASVAB and it was very similar to the SAT or CBEST tests that I have helped many students pass. It requires general knowledge and common sense as well as the ability to solve word problems in math.
It is rewarding to help people get through these tests so that they can continue on with their careers or fields of interest.
I am a Christian and have a daily Bible that combines the Old and New Testaments, Psalms and Proverbs. I have been attending Bible Studies since college.
I have taken the CBEST test and passed. I have tutored potential teachers and have had most pass the first time.
I have been tutoring students of all ages for over 20 years. I have a degree in music education which required that I take all of the methods courses for teaching that elementary school teachers take. I also did my student teaching in K-6th grades and then high school. I started tutoring students in my neighborhood while I was healing from a surgery that almost took my life and the children started getting excellent grades. I have found that I can successfully tutor most subjects and also tailor it to each student's learning style. I think that has been one of the keys to helping a student go from F's to A's; understanding how they learn and adapting my teaching method to accommodate that.
It is so important that a child be able to do the basic math skills. It is fun to show them how addition and subtraction are related and the same with multiplication and division. I employ a technique with word problems to help take the confusion that most kids feel doing them and they are so happy to find them so much easier to do.
I try to show my enthusiasm for math at the beginning and hope it is contagious!
I enjoy tutoring students in elementary science by making sure they get the vocabulary involved and then how the words relate to the concepts. It can be overwhelming to students but when broken down that way, it usually makes a big difference.
It is so important for a student to have command of the English language. It is cumulative from elementary school through college. I enjoy tutoring students of all ages in English and have also helped students where English is their second language.
I live near an alternative school where students get their GED and have tutored them in the various subjects. Many have dropped out of school for all types of reasons so it is rewarding for me to help them get through this phase of their education and also motivate them to continue. Most students realize how important an education is today to make a decent life for themselves and their families. I love being a part of that and usually offer to tutor them all the way through college.
I have a BA in music and have been teaching music for the last 19 years. I teach theory, technique and performance practices to all ages.
I tutor a lot of geometry. Being a computer scientist, my logic skills are enhanced and it is so relative to writing proofs in geometry. I enjoy helping students learn how to think logically as they solve the problems step by step. It is great to have students realize that problem solving really involves similar techniques.
I have taken the GMAT and tutored it successfully. It is an important test for graduate school and the student should be aware of how it is scored and what it involves so they can be prepared.
I find that when tutoring any English course involves helping students with the proper use of grammar. Many students aren't taught the basic rules by which sentences are constructed so their writing suffers as a result.
The GRE is another test important to admittance to graduate school. I enjoy helping students who have successfully made it through a Bachelors Degree go on to further their education.
I have played guitar since a young age learning chords and then studied classical guitar. I teach all ages the fundamentals of playing guitar, reading notes and also classical technique. I then send students on to other studios that teach electric guitar and tablature (mostly young boys) if they so desire.
Music is my passion and I love sharing it with my students. I think it is important to include theory and technique so the student understands what they are playing. I try to make it less like a class and more for enjoyment but with a level of understanding so they will continue to play as they get older. I tell them that a music store should equal a candy store once they can read notes.
I belonged to the Embroiderer's Guild of America for many years. I do needlepoint, crossstitch, knitting, crocheting, lace making and many other types of needlework.
I've been playing the piano for over 50 years and have a BA degree in music with piano as my major instrument. It is my passion and I enjoy classical and jazz. I also played in a restaurant playing popular music. I've been teaching piano for 19 years.
I find that Prealgebra sets the tone for how a child feels about math for the rest of their schooling so it is vital that they feel very confident that they can solve these type of problems. Making them feel that they can do this and excel at it is such a great reward for me as a tutor.
It is important for the student to understand the concepts in this class if they go on to Calculus. I try to make sure the students feel confident as they complete each chapter.
I can't impress enough on students the need to proofread anything they do because it is so easy to make a mistake and so easy to correct it if they take the time to just check themselves. At the holidays I tell them to be like Santa Claus and check it twice!
Reading is so important since it involves everything in life from being able to read a book to reading a recipe. It should be something enjoyable. The first Harry Potter book helped so many students, especially young boys, start reading because it was interesting and fun for them. I show my enthusiasm for reading and have many books that I lend out to students to get them motivated.
Most students dread taking this portion of the SAT and so it is my joy to help them get to a point so they can relax and focus and feel that they can do it. I've had one student get a perfect score on it and that was very cool!
Students have so much competition when it comes to getting into a four year school and their SAT scores are very important. I tutor students for this standardized test to help them achieve the best score they can since they have so much pressure on them to do well.
This section causes students a lot of anxiety and so I help them organize their thoughts in outline form and then write from this structure. It has helped students to feel more confident in their writing.
I used to make everything I wore including my coats. It is something I enjoy, and I have fun making bags and other accessories too. I often make over pieces of clothing I find on sale that could use updating. I also take up hems and take in or out seams as needed. I make my students music bags to carry their music in. It was funny to see someone I taught 10 years ago carrying that bag to get groceries now! Fitting patterns is quite an art and I am still working on that aspect. I make a model of the pattern first in a cheap material and then tweak that to get the right fit. I love to embroider on the pieces afterwards to really make it unique and have made some pretty lovely embroidered jackets and skirts.
The ability to spell is vital to a student's education. Any written communication that has misspelled words reflects badly on that person. I find helping a student hear the syllables as they are spelling is a good technique to getting the word correct but the ability to spell is also related to their reading skills.
A lot of students find statistics to be very interesting since the other math they have taken is so abstract while this involves real life applications. I found that the news made more sense since so much of the world is based on statistical concepts. I had no idea that football coaches used statistical computations to plan their plays! It gave me a new perspective on a lot of things and I try to pass that on to my students.
Study skills can make a huge difference in how well a student will do. The ability to organize and prioritize tasks carries over into all aspects of life. I have helped students achieve good grades and their goals by helping them with their study skills. I took a course in it myself at a junior college many years ago and it was invaluable when working on my masters degree.
An extensive vocabulary is so important in order for students to express themselves through writing. It also allows for better reading comprehension. I always advise students to get a calendar that introduces new words each day if possible.
I like to teach writing to students. They need to put their ideas down in writing and then organize them so they are in logical sequence. It is amazing how well they do once they learn to do this technique.
Very Knowledgeable — Barbara is very flexible with times, and is a master at about everything! She has a closet full of teacher editions of books to help in whatever subject you could be needing the tutor in. I needed help in statistics which is a very difficult subject, and she not only immediately knew how to answer the problems but often times memorized the specific theory or equations needed to solve it. Very imp ...
