Hello! I am currently a UC Berkeley student on extended leave for personal reasons. I am a geography major who is also a pre-med student and has finished 3 years at Cal. I earned high marks in high school and took many AP classes, so I've experienced first hand how to take on those types of courses. I am also an accomplished piano player, with more than 12 years' experience. I completed the Certificate of Merit program through level Advanced, which also means I am proficient with music theory. I am an avid photographer and videographer, and have had experience with freelance work in both fields. I am especially strong in history and biology, math up to Algebra II, and some chemistry. I received high marks on the SAT's, and can give helpful tips and supplemental material for preparation in addition to the usual tutoring.
I have had experience, both as tutor and tutee, on multiple occasions. I understand the frustration students may feel when one does not understand a subject. I value one-on-one teaching, a step by step approach, and having the student help themselves. I do not believe in simply giving out the answer, and I wish for the student to understand the concept. I found these approaches have always helped me in understanding a concept the best. I do understand, however, that each student is different and has different needs, and am more than willing to tailor my teaching methods to you or your student. I have been tutored by professional institutions as well as private, at-home tutors. I have tutored high school students in general chemistry and math. These particular sessions were focused on day to day homework assistance, as well as exam prep. My peers were able to walk away fully understanding the concept and did well on their exams. I have also tutored younger students in English as a second language, and later on math, where I reviewed with them using various ways including games, which kept them engaged much longer. I have also edited various high school students' papers, both for assignments as well as college applications. I also worked as editor in chief of my high school's newspaper where much of the editing was done by me due to our small staff.
With every student I've had the pleasure of working with, I always take a one on one approach. I like having the student try out problems first so we can identify where he/she has an issue. From there, I like taking a step by step approach, giving the student a chance to figure out the problem themselves with some guidance. I have often received compliments for simplifying complex concepts to bite size analogies and examples that demystifies a subject. I like having a relaxing environment as I do not believe pressure is conducive to learning when somebody is already frustrated with trying to understand a subject.
I look forward to working with you, and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
