I have been tutoring on the side (moonlighting) since I graduated from college in 1995. When I graduated from UC Irvine in 1995, I went to Kinkos and had about 1,000 flyers made in various hot colors and passed them out door-to-door in my neighborhood. I first began tutoring students in English as that was what my B.A is in. I also taught ESL both privately and in the classroom. I then obtained a Juris Doctortate from Northeastern University School of Law. After law school, I worked in the legal profession for several years. I probably should have tutored for the LSAT as I scored in the 80th percentile but I was very busy and the thought never entered my mind. From 2003 to 2005, I worked with inner city children in Baltimore, MD, and tutored them in public libraries in a myriad of subjects. I missed education very much, left law, and then earned a Master's degree in Library and Information Science. While working as an Academic Librarian, tutoring comes with the job. You are presented with questions about anything and everything and have to help students find information and often assist them in processing that information from a cognitive standpoint. What Librarians call "reference interviews" are really just mini tutoring sessions. This experience lends itself very well to tutoring and mentoring privately. I limit myself to the following subjects: English, Law, Career Counseling (including college counseling), and all the standardized exams ACT, SAT, GRE, LSAT for the English and Writing components only.
