My professional background is in electrical engineering with 15 years of working experience. My passion is helping people learn and enjoy math; the more one understands math the easier it is and the more they enjoy it. I was an in-class math tutor at Marina High School for Algebra I and Geometry for the 2011-2012 school year. I also independently tutor students from various local schools, middle school through college, in my home for Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II/Trig, College Algebra, General Geometry, Accelerated Geometry, Honors Pre-Calculus & Calculus. While in high school, I tutored fellow students in Algebra I, Algebra II and Trigonometry; and in college at the University of Washington, I assisted the TA in teaching Calculus.
In 2011, I successfully passed the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) required by the state of California for all prospective teachers.
I typically go over the section the student is currently working on and will sometimes give them (or email) written notes highlighting the main points. I work differently with every student and will address their individual needs. Some want help with their home work; I will explain the problem and first see if the student can answer it. If not, I will explain how to do each type of problem and will then have them complete the similar type problems on their own; I will direct and explain as necessary. Once they are proficient and confident in one type we move on to the next type until it is either completed or they understand everything well enough to complete at home on their own. We then move on to past areas they had difficulty in.
The goal is to find their deficiencies and correct them while keeping up with current assignments including preparations for upcoming quizzes and tests. With allowed time, I like to prepare them for the next section to be covered in class so that when the teacher goes over it in class they have already been exposed to it and have a good understanding of it which will make it easier for them to keep up and follow, in addition to reinforcing what they just learned.
