While Algebra was formally established as a branch of mathematics over 1,000 years ago, students still find it challenging. What I learned in my early days, was that students needed to adjust their thinking as they approached understanding concepts that used "variables" (the dreaded "x") and not just numbers. Once I helped students make that shift, learning Algebra became more natural and satisfying. With my professional background in engineering, I lived and breathed Algebra as a way to solve real-world problems, and now enjoy developing these skills in others.
Geometry is the branch of mathematics that explores the properties of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids. We will learn how to measure them, compare them, and understand their usefulness for various physical applications. Together we will explore how various geometric shapes that surround us were picked and the traits that made them suitable. We will also develop critical thinking skills by writing formal proofs, which involve step-by-step assertions to prove a conclusion, while providing mathematical justification for each step. Having at first struggled as a student of Geometry, I have first-hand knowledge of where students tend to stumble and know how to help students overcome the obstacles.
Prealgebra begins to process of assembling the building blocks for learning Algebra, establishing the foundation for developing skills in Algebra, and then the more advanced subjects in math.
