I appreciate this opportunity to introduce myself and look forward to meeting you.
I have a secondary teaching credential in English and have taught English language skills in grades 6 through 12 in California, New York and Michigan. I have enjoyed working with students who are struggling as well as students who are performing beyond grade level. I have experience helping reluctant writers develop an autobiographical or expository essay through a series of concrete steps that can build confidence and become a model for future writing. I also enjoy helping students master the phonetic and non-phonetic spellings of words in English, and I was crowned grammar queen by my fellow English teachers in my last full-time teaching position. I can help students with current assignments or develop activities specific to the skills which need to be mastered.
I also have a certificate in teaching English to speakers of other languages. I've enjoyed working both with teens and with adults in ESL classes. I have also worked with foreign exchange students to prepare them for the qualifying exams they need to enroll in college courses in the United States.
Vocal and instrumental music have been important lifelong activities for me, and I have many years' experience teaching piano lessons, music theory, and performing as a soloist and in ensembles and choirs.
I have developed computer skills through my experience in business, and have also taught keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets and html programming skills to students in junior and senior high school.
I have retired as a full-time teacher, but in the past few years have enjoyed tutoring and substitute teaching in grades K through 12. That has given me a chance to view current curriculum at various age levels and to review math, history, science, and other areas in which I have not been credentialed.
