My name is Briana, and have earned my BS in Physics with an emphasis in teaching at Seattle Pacific University. I am working on my masters in Industrial Engineering at the NCA&T, after which I plan to engage in Teach for America as a high school Math and science teacher. I believe my major as well as past experience have taught me how to effectively help students gain confidence, interest, and knowledge in their studies. I have learned to tailor my teaching to each student's learning style.
I have been tutoring since 11th grade; however, I have also been teaching in a class setting for over a year. This is my second summer working with SAI (Summer Algebra Institute), which teaches a range of math to junior high and high school students. This school year will also be my third as a Chemistry & Physics Professor's assistant.
Outside of the class, I enjoy working with kids as well. I volunteer as a tutor at Rainier Avenue Church and on the National Society of Black Engineers.
I look forward to serving you and you family as well.
Topics covered will include: Mastery of Equations and Inequalities, Linear Equations and Functions, Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities, Quadratic Functions, Polynomial functions, Powers, Roots, and Radicals, and Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.
Emphasis will be placed on graphs and applications of math pertaining to physics, as well as chemistry.
Mastery of introductory and 1st year Chemistry. Emphasis in algebraic concepts such as titration, unit conversion, and stoichiometry.
Mastery of pre-algebraic concepts and reasoning. Emphasis in fractions, percentage, and analyzing word problems.
I have 3+ years of teaching coursework including: exponents, factoring, inequalities, graphing, and systems of equations.
I have come up with a 6 part study skills plan for student k-college after taking classes in education, meta-cognition, and pedagogy for teachers. It consist of: reading, writing, testing, organization, motivation, and resources. All of these incorporate the student's understanding their learning style.
Here is a break down of the components:
Reading: browsing, highlighting, summarizing, anaylzing, and prereading questions
Writing: drafts, edits, peer edits, content vs context
Testing: note taking, review, reference page, SAT/tests tricks, critical thinking
Organizing: prioritization, tidiness, planners, and calendars
Motivation: setting goals, values, and priorities, and self rewards
Resources: teachers/professors, parents, websites, and peers
I have participated in track and field for six years - four in high school and two in college. I have qualified for finals in throwing, jumping, and running during that time, so I have learned to requirements for each.
I have also trained others while in college. In terms of methodology and general health knowledge, I have taken college courses on physical wellness, been CPR certified, and learned several training styles, including cross training, and HIIT, so that I can train aspiring athletes with nutritional guidance and necessary recovery. I am also completing my physical trainer's certification for verifiable knowledge.
