Hello Parents and Students!

I'm Alan R., a tutor who believes that the growth and happiness of the student is foremost. It is not merely a matter of learning facts and figures, but rather of bringing out the student's true and highest potential through inspiring and enjoyable lessons that cultivate a love of learning and a deeper understanding and appreciation of the wonders of life itself.

I'm an Ivy League grad, B.A. in English and M.A. in Communications/Film, both degrees from Columbia University.

I work as a writer/editor as well as a teacher/tutor. In my writing career I've had many articles published in the arts (film and art reviews and profiles) and sciences (feature healthcare articles), both in print and online. My recent film review of "Lincoln" was featured on the front page of Valley Scene Magazine. I would be happy to send/show samples of my work. I also write screenplays and currently have a script in development with a producer, so I can instruct in that area as well.

I have worked as classroom teacher for Kaplan Educational Services teaching the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) to students in need of extra help and encouragement. I have taught classes at several schools in the Los Angeles area and have always received a high rating.

As a tutor I have worked for Professional Tutors of America with elementary school students. I can work well with students of any age and strive to respect them as equals in a friendly and relaxed manner. I can also be firm when necessary but always in a kind and encouraging way.

I have a diverse background that includes sports, music, dancing, spirituality, and community activities for the well-being of society. I have played football, rugby, basketball, and golf (still play the latter two), and play several musical instruments including piano (classical and jazz), clarinet, and saxophone. I'm a good social dancer including Latin rhythms, rock, and ballroom. I am active in a world peace movement for a better world based on mutual respect and the happiness of all people.

I'm an open and trusting person, ready to help with any issue bearing on the happiness of the student and parents.

Looking forward to getting to know each other!

Best to you and yours,
Alan

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have a strong sports background including playing basketball, football, and rugby. I played in a basketball league in my teens and also intramurally in college at Columbia. I am a good coach and teacher and can teach all the funamentals of basketball including shooting, dribbling, rebounding and defense.

Film

I have an M.A. in Film from the Columbia University Graduate School of the Arts (B.A. in English, Columbia) and have worked as a film reviewer and production reporter for such Los Angeles area publications as Valley Scene Magazine, Splash Magazine, and On Production Magazine, with many articles currently online. I have also worked in film production as a writer, director, and co-producer, and currently have a screenplay in pre-production with Reel Mountain Films. I'm an experienced tutor having worked for WyzAnt, Kaplan Educational Services (ELA), Professional Tutors of America, and currently for Jubilate Academy in Torrance where I teach the SAT prep.
Thank you,
Alan R.

Study Skills

I'm a teacher/tutor and writer who has taught English Language Arts and Math for Kaplan Educational Services. In this capacity I helped high school students who were challenged by the CAHSEE develop their learning and study skills. I taught at five schools in the LA area and gained a lot of experience as these were full classes of up to 40 students. I've also tutored individually at the grade school level for Professional Tutors of America and am currently teaching critical reading SAT prep at the Jubilate School in Torrance, as well as English and math for 5th and 6th graders. When teaching English at the middle and high school levels I always emphasize the importance of vocabulary and strongly recommend the book, "30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary," which I then study together with my students as part of the curriculum.
