I love working with young people and sharing the passion I have for learning about the English language! One of the most important subjects in school is English. Reading and writing confidently are imperative for strong communication skills in adulthood. I am energetic, patient, comfortable with kids of all ages, and so excited to help!
In college, I majored in Writing/Literature/Publishing, a special program combining elements of all three subjects in one. I took workshop classes in creative fiction and poetry writing, so I know how to critique and guide creative writing. Literature classes required intense analysis and comparisons of literary works, both classical and contemporary. I gained a lot of practice writing academic essays, and I genuinely enjoy writing them! I am so excited to help guide students through academic essay-writing. Publishing courses ranged from book design to a course entirely on proofreading, where we perfected our skills of poring over articles to find the one missing letter in a misspelled word. I know the Chicago Manual of Style and MLA Handbook backwards, and I can proofread and copy edit efficiently, once essays are finished!
In addition to reading and writing, I spend most of my spare time involved in photography. I worked for Emerson College as a PR photographer, taking photos for the website, publications, and for local newspapers such as the Boston Globe. I am comfortable with all Canon and Nikon models, and I love sharing what I know about photography. There is an artist inside everyone, and I think it's important for young people to find and cultivate their creativity early. Creativity applies to all subjects--it leads to better problem-solving skills in math and science, and contributes to overall health and happiness, because we all need a way to express ourselves. It's our nature!
At Emerson College, I minored in American Sign Language, and I am comfortable helping students practice signing and carrying on conversations. I am also comfortable with many common computer programs, including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint), the iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote), Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe InDesign, and iMovie. I am comfortable with both Macs and PCs.
I look forward to meeting you!
I've been an active photographer for eight years, and worked for a college as a photographer for the PR and athletics departments. I had many photos published in the Boston Globe and on the college's own website. Before I left, I organized and ran clinics for younger students to learn strategies for high-quality athletics and event photography, so they could apply to take over my job. After working at the college, I briefly attended San Francisco Art Institute to take some courses in photography, where I learned about the mechanics of digital cameras, more in-depth and specific photography skills, and how to efficiently use programs from the Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop and Lightroom.
I played consistently throughout high school, and occasionally in college. Currently a 3.5/4.0 player. I own and have studied the USPTA handbook for coaching red ball/orange ball/green ball tennis (12 and under levels), and have filled in as a substitute coach for 10-and-under tennis clinics at my local club. I am comfortable with the USPTA program's progression for young players from basic athletic skills to tennis-specific skills to tennis strategy.
