I am recent graduate from the University of Washington with an MFA in creative writing and poetics, a BA in media and communication studies and a tefl/tesl/tesol certificate. I have tutored all subjects in the arts and humanities division for the last 8 years. Before tutoring, I spent four years in the Marine Corps, where I was responsible for training newer marines to be proficient in our field of work.
My pedagogical approach is to tailor my tutoring methods in each appointment to fit the learning style of the student. I have tutored in many different environments and what I have found to be consistent is the need for flexibility. Every person learns and thinks differently, which I view to be a tremendous strength.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While I worked for the University of Washington, I tutored and also worked as a consultant. A lot of what I did on a daily basis was not only tutoring, but also helping the students with whatever they needed. This included admissions essays, as well as researching different programs and campuses to help the students figure out what was best for them and how to achieve it. Then, I continued working with those students step-by-step until their goals were accomplished.
I tutored English often while I was working for the University of Washington. Most of my experience is with essays and creative writing, but the fundamentals and core structure of the language is a topic a enjoy. I am comfortable with not only essays, but also grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and word choice.
Before my undergraduate degree, I completed a completed the TEFL/TESL/TESOL certificate that qualifies me to teach ESL internationally. I have also tutored many ESL students and have developed a strong appreciation for what I also learn from my students during those sessions.
While attending a community college before my undergraduate and graduate degrees, I tutored first-year music theory for a year.
I have worked with many adults and children to improve reading skills. My approach is based solely on the students age, skill and comfort levels. I also have the TEFL certificate and specialize in working with ESL students learning to read in English.
While working on my Master of Fine Arts degree and the University of Washington, I tutored and workshopped for the university, specializing in academic essays and creative writing. I have tutored students working on business papers, admissions essays, poetry, prose, argumentative thesis driven papers and more.
