Melkonian is a physician with M.B.Ch.B degree from Al-Nahrain University, Baghdad, Iraq. He worked for four years as a physician in both private and public hospitals in Baghdad and finished his internship and residency to become senior resident in medical oncology. Melkonian continued work as a physician with the USAID-funded Local Governance Project Phase III (RTI-International) and was responsible for providing medical care to a team of 40 expatriate senior advisors and an Iraqi staff of 130. During 2011-2012 he worked as the Quality Improvement/ Quality Assurance Clinical Specialist with the Primary Health Care Project in Iraq (PHCPI), a USAID-funded project implemented by the University Research Co. Responsible for developing new Evidence Based Clinical Guidelines and training the Iraqi Ministry of Health Staff on using these guidelines.
Now he is living in California, United States of America and has the right to work in the States (Permanent Resident). He is preparing to get the United States Medical License (did USMLE Step 2 in August 2013).
