My name is Sarkis S. I am an American citizen of Armenian descent. I am an experienced, efficient teacher/tutor.I received my early education, elementary and high school, in Jerusalem, in present day Israel, and my college education in the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. In 1968, I graduated from A.U.B. with a BA degree in English
and a Teaching Diploma. After graduation, I taught English language
in the upper classes in various high schools in Lebanon, preparing my students for the Official Baccalauriate part I exam and Triple A, an English proficiency exam, a prerequisite for students seeking admission to A.U.B and other local colleges in Lebanon.
In 1999, my family and I immigrated to the United States where I soon got employed in a private school as a 4th-7th grade teacher to teach English and social studies
, world history
, and geography
). In 2001, I received my CBEST
with a Pass in English and math
. In 2008, I was designated to take over the position of General Supervisor, which I performed most diligently for three consecutive years. Because of financial difficulties, which my school was beset with, I was discharged from my duties in 2011.
My early experience as a middle school and high school teacher has been very rewarding, but my teaching experience with younger children has been much more fulfilling and, obviously, fun because their enthusiasm, curiosity, and unconditional willingness to learn have been very challenging and kept me alive, alert, active, and young.
My preference for younger children, however, does not deter me from teaching older students, including adults, because first and foremost I love teaching, and I enjoy teaching. And most importantly, I have confidence in my ability to teach, because I know how to connect with my students and address each student's individual needs to help them achieve confidence and success. However, I emphasize the importance of practice, because there can be no success without diligence and perseverance. In addition, I am especially experienced and adapt at working with students who have learning disabilities, such as speech
problems and difficulty reading
. My patience and keen insight into their problems have created an atmosphere suitable for learning, thus producing fruitful results.
Besides English and social studies, I also have experience in teaching/tutoring math on the elementary level.
