I have over ten years of college-level teaching experience in language, literature and film, from first-year to Masters level. I've worked successfully in many institutions--small liberal arts colleges (Kenyon), elite private universities (Duke) and large state universities (Ohio State, Cal State LA, George Mason University)--with students of widely varying backgrounds and ages. My PhD is in French language and literature, but I've also taught beginning Italian. I have led students on study abroad to Paris, studied in various programs in France myself, and traveled a good deal in France and Italy.
My training is in communicative language teaching, where students practice speaking by using the language in realistic situations, and not just "talking about" the language. Tutoring sessions will be designed according to students' needs and desires, e.g., conversation, grammar, writing, reading, culture, etc. I have worked one-on-one with many high school and college students, and my students appreciate the supportive and encouraging learning environment I create.
