Mrs Astghik is an exceptional tutor. She is very knowledgeable and has very good communication skills that allows her to explain the material in a simple way, helping my son understand the subjects easier and faster. My six year old son really enjoys her lessons and he is always looking forward to seeing her. She shows great patience. Thus, I can state with absolute certainty that Mrs. Astghik has what it takes to be an exceptional teacher.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Elementary K-6th encompasses a vast array of subject matter, which includes Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Health, Art, Physical Education. An educator must have content area knowledge and use proper pedagogy while teaching.
I have worked with elementary students for the past 21 years. I started as a teacher's assistant, then became a Special Education assistant for 10 years working with children with disabilities and teaching them content area subject matter under the direct supervision of an NBCT teacher.
I am currently teaching in a second grade classroom and have been for the past 7 years. I hold a clear professional K-6 professional credential by the state of California.
I believe that a teacher is morally obligated to enter the classroom with only the highest of expectations for each and every one of her students. Thus, the teacher maximizes the positive benefits that naturally come along with any self-fulfilling prophecy; with dedication, perseverance, and hard work, her students will rise to the occasion.
I aim to bring an open mind, a positive attitude, and high expectations to each tutoring session. I believe that I owe it to my students, as well as the community, to bring consistency, diligence, and warmth to my job in the hope that I can ultimately inspire and encourage such traits in the children as well. I believe a teacher should be a mentor, but still a seeker of knowledge and always updating himself or herself. A stagnant teacher cannot mentor a child who is with full blood and vigor.
Phonics is a necessary part of any good method of teaching children or anyone to read. Teaching phonics and helping to develop phonemic awareness is the key to mastering words, which is the first key step toward successful reading. Children as well as adults need to develop a knowledge of the letters and the sounds represented by the letters. Then they must be taught to combine (or blend) various letter sounds together to form words, which is then followed by reading sentences and simple stories.
This is a logical progression for children or anyone to learn reading, where they develop accuracy in decoding words and pronouncing words. This method of teaching also helps anyone to spell correctly. Gradually, the different elements of phonics are combined to produce new words, and leads to the discovery of new words, which eventually becomes an "automatic reflex."
By learning phonics and phonemic awareness, people gain the ability to pronounce new words, develop clear articulation, improve spelling, and develop self confidence.
I have been teaching phonics for the past 7 years to 1st and 2nd grade students and have been very successful at it. I have also taught phonics to children with special needs in various aspects of my career.
