I have always enjoyed teaching and helping others. My first student was my little sister when I was ten and she was 4. Before she entered first grade, I taught her to read. I have been teaching both professionally and voluntarily for 20 years. I have previously had a California teaching credential for English. I have had extensive training in working with English Language Learners, and practical classroom experience. I have worked with adults and children, and I enjoy working with people of all ages. I love reading various types of books and subjects. Therefore, I am not limited to English Literature or English Language Arts. When I first returned to school, I focused on becoming a math major. So I can help in math up to Algebra and Trigonometry as soon as I have completed certification here. As a college student, my GPA was 3.5, and I was in the Honor Society. I don't have a photographic memory though. I had to work for those grades and honors like most people.

Having such extensive and varied experiences gives me a wide range of techniques and styles to choose from. I am convinced that different people learn differently and at different paces, but all people can learn. Marzano Research based learning strategies are still a primary resource as well as Multiple Intelligence Theory and Backwards Lesson Design. I can help tailor your learning experience like a well fitted suit, and equip you to take on practically any subject successfully!

I hope to work with you soon.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have personally studied the Bible for 20 years, and I am still engaged in studies. The anthology of 66 books seems inexhaustible. As a tutor of Bible Studies, I can tutor in historical topics, literary topics, life application topics, prophetic topics, etc.

CBEST

The CBEST is the California Basic Educational Skills Test, and a passing score is required in order to attain a substitute teaching credential. There are three sections; Reading, Math, and Writing. I passed all three sections in 2004 on the first attempt. Therefore, I know what you are facing, and I can help with any of the three subjects. I have extensive experience tutoring and teaching. I would love to help you prepare for the CBEST

Elementary (K-6th)

Although my California teaching credential was specifically for English related subjects, I am qualified to substitute and tutor all K-6th subjects. One strength developed as an English teacher is the ability to break down information in almost any subject to make it understandable to the student.

Elementary Math

Before I became an English major, I was attempting a math major in college. I did well and enjoyed math up until the level of calculus. I have passed the CBEST test required for substitute teaching which requires understanding elementary math. I have experience tutoring through Algebra Two and enjoy the challenge of solving various equations. I would love to help you gain better understanding and confidence in your math abilities.

English

I was previously California credentialed in English. I have passed the CSET and earned a Bachelor's of Arts in English Literature. Previously, I taught English in the classroom for six years and tutored an additional 2 years. I love literature of various kinds. I am also a writer, and I enjoy the writing process. English is my specialty. I would be glad to help you in this subject.

ESL/ESOL

Having taught in California public schools for 8 years, I have worked with many students who are English Second Language learners. I was previously credentialed by the state of California to teach English in all grade and skill levels. During my years of teaching, I received specialized training in teaching ESL. I also have previous experience working with adult second language learners. It doesn't matter what language is your primary language, or where you are in learning English, I can help you become more fluent in English.

Phonics

Phonemes are the sounds of a language. The written English language is constructed largely by the phonetic sounds represented by the alphabet. Although the English language is complicated by the adoption of words and roots from other languages, phonics are the foundation of reading in English. Until phonics are mastered, all of the exceptions aren't very helpful.

Besides having a linguistic class as a part of my degree in English, I learned to read with phonics as the foundation; and I am a great reader. I would love to help you or your child master phonics.

Public Speaking

I have a minor in Theater, which gives me a unique perspective on public speaking. As an undergraduate, I have taken a speech class. As a professional full time teacher, I have six years of daily public speaking experience, eight years if you count substitute teaching. Prior to teaching, I spoke publicly at work as a staff trainer and a director. I have also spoken publicly in churches. With the extensive experience and training in public speaking skills, I am sure I can help you overcome any fear of public speaking and acquire a polished presence.

Reading

I love reading and passing on the joy of reading. As a professional teacher, I have been equipped with many strategies to help struggling students increase their reading skills and enjoyment. I taught my first student to read when I was only about 10. I helped my little sister learn to read before she entered kindergarten. I would love to help you fall in love with reading too.

SAT Reading

While working with Huntington Learning Center, it was a requirement for employees to take and pass the SAT. I don't have the record of the score, but the reading portion was very high. I also passed both the math and writing portions. It was part of my job to tutor students in college entrance exams, and my students did very well.

Social Studies

Studying cultures of various kinds is intriguing. Learning about different people groups, their beliefs, the types of clothing they wear, their cultural artistic expressions, and how they form governments can give one a great appreciation and understanding for who people are. Knowing how the different cultures effect each other is critical in the global society in which we live. Other than the typical social studies in grade school, I have studied Social Psychology, Anthropology, and Native American history. One of my Literature classes involved literature written by people from different cultures which gave rich perspective from those cultures. I can help you gain deeper meaning from the various Social Studies topics.

Study Skills

As a life long student, I have acquired great study skills. I certainly was not born with incredible recall to a photographic memory. Just like most people, I have to work hard to achieve the A's and B's. So I can share with you my favorite skills and more. As a professional teacher, I have gained even more study skills. I am also familiar with different learning styles. We can find the strategies that work best for you.

Writing

One of the primary skills an English major perfects is writing. I have successfully submitted extensive papers as an undergraduate with a 3.48 GPA. As a graduate, I became a secondary teacher tasked with teaching writing skills. The training in writing pedagogy (instructional methods) and several years of experience teaching writing have honed my skills in editing and improving students' writing abilities. After CAHSEE results came in, Dean Myers at Ann Sobrato High School remarked, "You're a writing coach!" I would love to coach you and improve your writing abilities.

Very Positive — Sarah is a very patient and talented tutor! Sarah has been working with my son for number of weeks now and during every lesson she goes through the writing & reading materials carefully and patiently with him. Sarah also has some great reading comprehension strategies that my son's school teachers never taught him! These strategies really helped my son think more deeper about what he just read. S ...
