Currently I'm a student at California State University Long Beach and I'm studying to be a teacher. Last semester I had an opportunity to work with the Long Beach Blast program which is a tutoring/mentoring program for at risk kids in the Long Beach School District. I have a passion for wanting to see students learn. Please contact me if you think I can be of assistance.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've worked in two daycares that were K-6th and done homework help. I've worked in a Kindergarden, first, second and fourth grade classroom. I've taught P.E. to a third and fifth grade class. Currently, I'm going to school to be an elementary school teacher at California State University Long Beach.

Phonics

I've worked in the area of phonics before when I've tutored in reading. The girl I tutored had trouble pronouncing words so I would help her sound them out. Phonics is breaking down the word into the sounds each letter makes. I've also worked as a sub in a first grade class and the teacher left reading assignments for the students to do. As the students came across words that they did not know then I would help them sound it out. I've worked with students on homework and as they're reading then I would help them sound out words.

Public Speaking

I've taken an entry level speech course that taught about the different types of speeches such as persuasive. I've take a speech and debate class. It taught the different aspects of how to conduct a debate. I've been in front of a classroom teaching a lesson as a sub and helper. I spoke at my churches ladies prayer breakfast and I'm getting ready to help a friend of mine teach a book study at my church on Thursday nights which will involve speaking to a group of ladies in regards to the material in our book.

Study Skills

At the beginning of my college years I was required to take a class is basic study and organizational skills. As time has progressed I have refined those skills. I can teach someone how to pick out key words when they read to be able to clearly understand what is going on. I'm able to guide in note taking so that a student knows what's important to write down or how to abbreviate to remember what was being said. I'm able to help a student learn what best way to study to fit their personality.
